Actually, it's from either eating the monkey meat or handling it (I forget which one). You are not right (but nice try:) )

Yeah, it started way back, when tribal people used to eat monkies without properly preparing them.

They would eat small amounts of the meat raw and drink some of the blood, believing it would give them the nimbleness or cunning of the monkey. The uncooked meat contained the pathogen. Even just one infected human could have stared an epidemic (assuming non-monogamy or blood rituals).
