I'm from New Zealand. Here, having a tamoko, or a facial tatoo is not only part of our heritage in the Maori culture, but it denotes nobilty, respect (or mana) and is seen as beautiful. Sure, prison facial tatoos can be seen as a bad thing, but here, the tamoko is worn by men and women of great courage and social standing. They show stories of your elders, who you are and where you come from, basically someone can look at your face and know your roots and your life story and see how they can relate to you. It is similar in Samoa and Fiji.
