-312 if you think about it, other languages are confusing. before there was english you went up to someone and they said "Bien means bien" well what does the word bien mean? "bien" did someone just make words in english to go with the words in like spanish and french? amirite?

english is a 'mutt' language.

totally

by Anonymous 13 years ago

English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and probably others all stem from Latin.

They would say 'Bien' means whatever means 'good' in the language the other was speaking. I am American, and speak English, but just because English is your language doesn't make it the best language. Its a combonation of many others, and it came about like all the others--from Latin. Really English is a more confusing language to learn, statistically its the hardest.

Actually, slavic languages are the hardest to learn because of the amount of letters and accents that don't exist in the English language.

It's not about the amount of letters or accents, it's about grammar rules and structure. Most other languages follow strict rules so they're easier to understand once you get going, but English constantly contradicts itself (example I before E except after C rule only applies sometimes) so you basically have to memorize how to apply every word in English

and no one came up before english and said "bien means bien" because you wouldnt even say the word "means" if english didnt exist.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i didnt know what the word "means" in spanish means. And also, the language Tamil is the oldest language in the world.

I've been thinking about what I say and how I say it, and oftentimes I just wonder to myself why the hell we would ever say it that way.

English did not come from Latin (directly). It is a Germanic language, putting it in the same language family as German, Dutch, Norwegian, Danish, etc. But it also borrows a LOT of words from French, which as has been stated is a Romantic language stemming from Latin. This sometimes makes it seem like English itself is a Romantic language.

Maybe if you really thought about it you would know that languages developed at the same time. It wasn't just Latin first, then German, then French. They were all branches of Latin that formed after Rome had taken over the Germanic tribes, England, and Gaul (France)
