It's still on the hard drive until it gets overwritten by a new file. The computer merely notes that the space isn't being used. Until it has been over-written you can recover the files with the right software Here's a URL for some free file recovery software: http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download If your on a family comp, run it and see what your family tried (and failed) to get rid of.
