+133 someone should create a shorter word that means african american because black sounds insensitive and african american takes too long to say, amirite?

Black is not (fucking) insensitive(, goddammit!). It is not insensitive nor is it racist to point out the color of one's skin. It is, however, when one is discriminated against because of it.

But those words you used are....

Negro?

That's just Spanish for Black...

Besides the term African American is untrue in some cases. They just assume that all slaves came from africa?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Hopefully none are. But im fairly certain that the term comes from the fact that people only assume that blacks acestors came from Africa.

I say black. I'm white, so why not? I will only use African-American if it is a person (white, black, whatever race) who was born in or lived in Africa and now lives in America... I am not Italian-American because my grandparents and mom were born in Italy... I am American. I hate all the 'politcally correct' bullshit.

How about we call white people white and black people black and leave it at that? If anyone has a problem with that, click here and read this article. It should really put things in a clearer and more direct way: http://tinyurl.com/chrsm7w

That is so eye-opening.

"Hey, I met this really cool black guy today. I think we're gonna be friends." "Whoa whoa whoa... did you just call him black? Fucking racist."

Black and African American aren't necessarily the same thing. If you address an African person living in America as black more often than not they get really offended. Black Americans generally have different morals and views than Africans, Jamaicans, etc. and there's actually YouTube videos of people talking about why they don't want to be referred to as black if they're Jamaican or African and vice versa. It's really interesting. I'd rather be referred to as black because even though my acestry is most likely from Africa I have literally no connections to those roots. Every value, moral, and tradition I have in my household is completely of American culture. The way I see it, "black" people are the ones who are descendants of slaves in this country and African Americans are people who lived in Africa and migrated to this country not as slaves. You could be of European decent and be considered African if you were born there, and maybe your parents were born there and so on and then move to America and be technically African American. Black is the more politically correct term, IMO.

African-American is a ridiculous term because not all black people are from Africa and not all people from Africa are black. If a person is living in America but not from Africa, they're not African-American. Most of the so-called African-Americans have never set foot in Africa. Where your ancestors from is irrelevant. If it was relevant, we'd all be something-African or something-European. I, for example, as a white South African, would be "European-African", because that makes complete sense. Being offended at being descriptively called black or white or whatever else makes about as much sense as being offended by being called a girl/boy/man/woman. It's like how dare you? I'm female-homo sapiens sapiens.
