+203 Why do most African Americans have that 'I was a slave' complex? It was 200 years ago, time to move on. amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Because African Americans continued to be oppressed up until the early 1970's (at least) and continue to to suffer the effects of slavery and segregation to this day = both mentally and physically (and by that I mean socially and economically).

by Anonymous 13 years ago

"...and continue to to suffer the effects of slavery and segregation to this day = both mentally and physically (and by that I mean socially and economically)." How? Are African Americans still slaves? Are they segregated? In our society, can a black man or women interact with people of a different race? Can a black man or woman hold a higher-standing job than a white man?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

well its pretty much common knowledge that african americans are socially and economically depressed. Sure its hardley comparable to slavery hundreds of years ago, but take a look at the stats. And whats more it would be irrational to seperate the issues facing the african american population now and their history

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Ok, see, it bothers me that people think African Americans should get special treatment because they have economic hardships. There are plenty of white people in poverty as well but they don't get special treatment. It seriously time for people to stop using their hard life or the hard lives of their ancestors as excuses for people to hold their hand through life. It is definitely possible to rise above what you were given.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

WTF? seriously? I have never met anyone with this kind of "complex" But I am an african american in high school, and I still face racism on a daily basis at school. It's not funny and this is not ok.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But of course, white people can't possibly face racism. No one cares when racism is performed towards a white person.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

He never said anything about white people not facing racism...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm not sure if this is a troll post or not.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I have African American friends who will play the slavery card and they live in like the most accepting places ever. Most of the people who use it bring it up in situations that aren't even related to slavery in any way and want to guilt trip the person they're using it against.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Wow, this really is pathetic. What is wrong with you? A. You're an insignificant troll or B. You're a racist scumbag who actually believes this. Disgusting. You clearly have much to learn and I hope you do asap. P.s. dumbass...a church in one of the shitty southern states was just trying to ban interracial relationships. If you think people aren't still treated differently wake up. That's only one Tiny example of what happens.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Are you kidding? What church was that? I do think this post wasn't referring to black people who have legitimate problems with equality, but those who say that they themselves were slaves and call others racist even when race has nothing to do with it. I disagree that it's "time to move on," because there are still inequalities minorities face, but I don't think the post was meant in such a degrading way.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Referencing your postscript: That was an isolated incident in something like Kentucky. Parts of the deep south are a bit more racist than others, but please don't lump them all together. I used to live in Alabama and people there were no more racist than anywhere else I've lived. The South isn't that bad. It only seems that way because you're always hearing about idiots in the news that do dumb shit like ban interracial couples.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

What does the state that the church was in have to do with anything? Do you think racism is non-existent in northern states?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Though I disagree with it, that church has every right not to recognize interracial relationships. Churches have the right to discriminate as long as what they're discriminating against is against their personal beliefs as a church. The First Amendment has it's good points, but that's not one of them.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Of course that's only racism against black people. It couldn't possibly be racism against the white people who have significant others who are black.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

"P.s. dumbass...a church in one of the shitty southern states was just trying to ban interracial relationships. If you think people aren't still treated differently wake up. That's only one Tiny example of what happens." First of all, P.S*, and tiny*. Second of all, "shitty southern states"? Oh hell no. Just because us in the south talk differently and look differently, doesn't mean we're more racist than the northern states. an isolated incident was what that was. There's other incidents in other states, NOT JUST SOUTHERN STATES, that have the same problems, that particular problem just became more famous than others. You, my friend, are horrible. Get your facts straight. "You're a racist scumbag who actually believes this." As for this, how does this post make him racist? if anything, it makes YOU racist for thinking that African-Americans should get special treatment over what happened over 200 years ago. Yeah, it happened up to 1970's. but I can guarantee that you are 40 years old. Learn your history you... How you say, "insignificant troll."

by Anonymous 12 years ago

not even a few. A tiny minority more like. In fact if heard more white people complaining about black people complaining, than black people complaining.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think it's all around the same.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Every black I've ever met has had that particular complex.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

that says more about you than black people

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm guessing you've met 2 black people in your entire life.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You guess wrong. I live in a predominately black neighborhood.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I want to love this comment more than once.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

If a black person says they were a slave 200 years ago, they are immortal. Kill them and drink their blood to become immortal yourself.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Wait... so are you proposing us Jews stop complaining about being slaves 3000 years ago? Dick.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Pretty sure all races were slaves at one point or another...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Actually, as far as I know, White people have never been slaves.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

From around the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries, there were a significant number of white slaves in Muslim countries. It was common for pirates to raid ships in the Mediterranean and bring slaves back to North African countries.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Hmm.. Didn't know that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's not very common knowledge, mostly because records weren't kept like they were in America. Pretty much every ethnic group has been enslaved at some point in history, but some, like the enslavement of Africans, were just more well known.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Okay, I'm getting tired of this. Slavery and extreme racists were how many decades and centuries ago? The school I go to is mostly filled with black kids. Guess what? If a white kid says one thing about a black person or says nigger, all hell breaks loose. But black people call the white kids "honkeys" and "crackers" all the time? Now that is apparently not racist? You never hear of a black kid getting in trouble for "racist remarks" but it's always the white kid that will get in trouble. Yeah I fully understand that blacks had a rough past. But none of that affects them today. Are they still slaves? Do they still go to separate schools? Are they still not allowed to be in a relationship with a white girl? No, no, and no. People say white people have better opportunities then them, no we have the same amount of opportunities as everyone else. But (this is gonna sound racist, but based on the people that go to my school) it's the white kids that take advantage of the lessons we get at school, it's the white kids that are taking all of the opportunities they get to have a better life. On the first of the month you don't here the white kids bragging about food stamps and welfare.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I realize not all black people are like this, but if you compare it to the amount of white people on welfare and food stamps there is a HUGE difference. So we may not be slaves but there is reverse racism towards white people. And no one says anything about that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

"On the first of the month you don't here the white kids bragging about food stamps and welfare." Holy shit. Wow. I honestly cannot believe you just typed that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I really don't like that you used the word "most."
