+753 Most of the spells in 'Harry Potter' are in in Latin, the language of the Ancient Romans, right? And I think we can all agree that magic dated back to Ancient Rome. So how did the Ancient Roman witches and wizards talk to each other without casting spells all over the place, amirite?

Well, I'm sure they didn't wave their wands around when they were casually speaking to one another.

Yeah, but wizards have security blanket attachments to their wands and hold them constantly. Also, a talented enough wizard can do magic without his wand.

Ahhh touche...you win this one goodfellow; ten points for you.

*bows*

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes, well a talented enough wizard would also know how to control their magic.

Good point.

The answer's simple: it's magic.

Filthy mudbloods....taking over even since then!

Actually (according to wikipedia), the educated elite spoke Greek and we all know wizards would have been in the educated elite so they would've only used Latin when casting spells.

EASY. The only way magic can be properly executed when the proper wand movements are used.

You guys are stupid. Harry Potter is a ficional character who never existed, just like edward. Those spells won't actually work retards. Amirite just isn't the same sincs MLIA found out about it.

Say under your account, not anonymously, you coward. Seriously. You have no imagination or creativty. People like you should not exist.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Really?... I mean really? Do you honestly think the OP thinks Harry Potter is a real person? It's hypothetical you twit.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You stupid muggle! Someone hasn't gotten over that they didn't get over not getting his Hogwarts letter!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You just asked two questions in one there, bud.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

How do they teach spells to students? They just say it. They can say "expelliarmus" over and over and over if they like, but if they don't mean it/want to actually cast the spell, they won't. Simple.

This debate is fascinating and all, but really, many of the spells, while BASED in Latin, and, to our non-roman ears, sound like latin, most of the time they are not actual latin words with a correctly formed tense and all that rot. Therefore, I think that in addition with the wands (or lack thereof) the ancient roman wizards would have been safe.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I agree with you The spells use the roots and prefixes of the words, not the full and correct word

Alright guys, this is definately a great question. but i do have to agree that we must remember that harry potter is fictional, (as much as i hate to admit it some times.....)
