+323 Everyone keeps saying that Avatar is based off of another movie, but each person says a different movie. Does that mean that all those movies were based off each other or that Avatar is an original idea? amirite?

I've only ever heard Pocahontas. :/

by Anonymous 13 years ago

there were two recent posts about it being like dancing with the wolves and ferngully

Avatar had one of the most basic plots of all time. But if there was one movie that it was most like, it would be Pocahontus. Avatar has to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen in theater.

I thought it was ok, but I think too big of a deal was made about it. It wasn't the greatest movie of all time.

Pocahontas. For sure.

AVATAR IS A BITTER OFF OF POCAHONTAS. 'NUFF SAID.

i dont get how to agree or disagree because they asked 2 questions that could be answered yes or no so there's nothing to agree on.

Avatar has a plot that other movies and books had way before he started writing though. He copied things out of a book I read almost exactly in some parts, and the book was published a pretty long time ago. In the 60's I think.

Avatar is basically Pocahontas with ponytail sex.

Pochahontas had sex with dances with wolves and out came Avatar.

The Movie Avatar is not an Original Idea. it uses several badly overused Archetypes of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Genres and its only real attraction was that it was shown in 3-D due to its basic plot. That is why it seems seems so similar to other movies with similar overused ideas. The reason you hear that it is based off of several different movies is that a.) people are stupid and b.) those same people like to make themselves sound important and intelligent

There really haven't been any original ideas for action or Sci Fi movies for some time now, most new movies coming out are either direct remakes or movies that are practically the same, but use slightly different effects or plots. as a blockbuster employee i've had a lot of experience with this

it's your basic "Don't hurt mother earth" story. There are bunches of these. Dating way back before Cameron was even alive. find me an original idea, that's genuinely original.

The only thing that made it so good was the editing and the 3-d graphics. But yes a very basic plot were the character starts out on the wrong side and learns from others has his morals changed and betrays people for the what is right

thats like saying everything that has to do with a forbidden couple in it is like romeo and juliet. there are romeo and juliet stories happening everyday, so its not like they were like "hey i read/heard of romeo and juliet! im going to go get a forbidden romance on now!"

The way i see it, even if Cameron did come up with the idea decades ago, it still borrowed pretty heavily from other movies, not just one, mostly from Pocahontas, i.e. Man who's initials happen to be J.S. starts off on the wrong side, falls in love with the chieftain's daughter who happens to get most of her knowledge from an ancient tree with all the knowledge of the ancestors, then must fight his own people for what is right (yes, the basic outline is common, but there are some details that are just too similar to ignore). Also, from another movie, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, a similarity was the fact that in Avatar, in order to connect to the animals, they would plug in their ponytail tentacle things, whereas in Atlantis, there was a crystal that every citizen had that plugged directly into their mechanical fish vehicle things (once again, too similar to ignore)... I'm just sayin'

avatar is 100% like fern-gully the last rain forest i am just saying, the human gets turned into them, the fairies live in a tree, they love the forest and the humans are destroying it for there own personal good, they try to fight back, in one scene when they are fighting the big machine its just like in the movie avatar, they even recognize him when they are fighting back just like in avatar, if u don't believe check it out yourself. -jake
