I loved Harry Potter... when I was in fourth grade. C'mon people, grow up. Read a real book. amirite?

Top Comment

Harry Potter is just as real a book as any classic listed above (eg- wuthering heights, uncle toms cabin, tom sawyer, etc.) It's features just as effective storytelling as any of the other books, the same literary devices, and like those classics, it challenged stereotypes of its literary genre. It has transcended being just another kid's book, and it's popular in hundreds of different countries with multiple audiences. It's been made into a movie (just like wuthering heights. just like great expectations. just like huck finn.)
it's a real book. just because YOU'VE (sadly) outgrown its magic doesn't mean the rest of the population has to be as surly and pessimistic as you.

It's kind of hard to explain but I'll try:
It's two stories in one. There is a world where everyone lives, you don't know whether it's earth or not. There's a story going on there. But in this world there's a bartender who's actually a hero and the main part of the book is him telling is story. His name is Kvothe (pronounced like Quothe).

the thing is is that Shakespeare's works were essentially spat on in his time. It's all up to perception. So from an unbiased standpoint. JK Rowling is amazingly consistent. She tackles love in an unorthodox way (which is brilliant). And i personally think that you all are just too close minded to see that.

Like Shakespeare, her works may be looked down upon now, but quite possibly in the future they may be taught in school.

I'll read real[classics, boring documenting] books when I -have- to. I'm only just becoming a sophomore. The books in the school library are vandalized, and I can't get to the library near me.
I would prefer reading books I /enjoy/, like the Harry Potter series.
I do enjoy other books, like The Book Thief.
Some topics disgust me. Slavery and The Holocaust [details] disturb me beyond belief. How people can treat humans like that... I had nightmares.
Some books, like Uncle Tom's Cabin, are out of the question.
And besides, I'm still young. I want to enjoy reading what I am. I want to look forward to my free time to read a book. Being "well-written" doesn't mean it's a good book. Something could have subtle jokes, clever use of irony and metaphors, and extensive vocab, but if the topic isn't interesting, forget it.
Let people read what they want without criticizing them, please.

Harry Potter may seem a tad childish to some, but it's far from unreal. I don't know about you, but sometimes I'd much rather dive into something magical than force myself to read a dull book with nothing new or interesting in it. Harry Potter is well written and keeps the reader going far longer than with any of the books I've seen mentioned. However, everyone has their own opinion. But you can't say a book isn't real simply because you don't like it.

Besides, I've grown up with Harry Potter and any book that's had such a vast impact on my life deserves to be classed as a real book. What exactly is it you're responding to "no" with? OH, is your favorite book NOT your printer manual? Sorry, I just assumed you enjoyed dry and tasteless literature rather than well-written and widely renowned literature. Do you hate Shakespeare as well? Macbeth had witches in it, you know. It also features character development, suspense, a villain, blood, fantasy, and mystery. Oh wait, hold on, Harry Potter has that too.
Have you read the books? All of them? Or are you basing your judgements off of the movies? Because it sounds like you've either never read the books, or you read them, and just didn't understand them. Either way, I don't appreciate being called an idiot by some faceless internet wanderer.

Who posted this, Edward Cullen? What, are you saying that 'Twilight' is a "real book". OK, first, Edward Cullen is not a Vampire. Real vampires have fangs, they don't "sparkle like angels". The Count of Monte Cristo is a vampire, and so is Dracula. Edward Cullen is a fairy. And second, have you even read the books? I'm 20 and I just re-read the first two books. I've also read most of Shakespeare's classic and popular plays, I'm an English major in my third year of univeristy, and I enjoy bits of all works/genres of literature. Teen fiction is it's very own genre and Rowling did an amazing job of it, changing the genre in many ways for the better. I enjoy many of the "classics" but I also have a strong respect for teen fiction and the Harry Potter books. If anything, they get kids reading, which simply can't be a bad thing. Maybe some people "grow out" of teen fiction, but I don't think it's needed. My mom is 50 years old and an English consultant (former teacher) and still reads new teen fiction novels (i.e., House of Night). I don't think you should ever discount a genre of books because you think you're too "mature" for it, that closes you off from what could be an amazing story/experience. Be open and read whatever interests you, regardless of the age of the target audience.
