-114 As a waitress, most people that tip the server at a restaurant under 20% even if they do a good job are either old people stuck in the 19th century, ignorant jackasses, or teenagers that don't know how to do simple math, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

a normal tip is 15% and maybe the waitress did a bad job

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yep, it's totally acceptable to only tip 15%. I generally tip atleast 20% or more though because I feel bad to only leave a couple of dollars, even if the bill is only $10.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Same. And after reading the posts on notalwaysright.com, I have a new respect for people who work in retail and other services. So I like to be a bit more generous.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

A normal tip is 20% today.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I have so much respect for people who are waiters and waitresses, they have a hard job, but they dont deserve 20%. Like maybe if its a high class or they are super super nice, but mostly not really. Its not like they don't get paid besides tips, tips are extra. and more than often they are paid above minimum wage

by Anonymous 12 years ago

20% is a pretty big tip, you'd have to do something pretty special to earn that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yesterday, we went out to eat and the bill was 11.29, we left a five dollar tip.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Even if you tipped 300% every time you went out, that wouldn't disprove the post.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They are already contributing towards your salary as they are paying for the food. The tip they give out isn't your right. It's nice of thema if they do tip you but if they don't, there is no need to be a sour bitch about it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Dude no. Waiters and waitresses rely on their tips. Thats where their money comes from, as a waiter u dont even make minimum wage. U make like 4 an hour plus tips. Dont be a douche, tip well

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yes, but as much as they depend on it, tips aren't a given right. Anytime they receive a tip, they're relying on peoples generosity. When you think of it like that, they're kind of lucky when they get anything.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Okay, try working for $2.15 an hour and getting stiffed on a few tables. In today's society, tips are custom. If you don't intend to leave one, eat at home.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

In America. From what I hear of England when my dad went there, tipping is rare.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You're right, I should have specified.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That may be the first time someone has said that to me without a long pointless argument.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

This. When I worked as a waiter, I was only left tips by Americans, or people that were super generous, or people that I really really helped out (getting the full list of ingredients for the night because they were allergic to a ton of stuff; getting their car keys out of the trash, etc.) In Australia, and I'm guessing some other countries, the wage is set so tips aren't essential, and are only an extra, but unnecessary, reward.

*them

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Maybe it's that attitude that makes people not want to tip you.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Way to make yourself look like an idiot and an asshole.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

And yeah as for the op, 15 percent is the expected tip percentage. 20 Is a little high

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Some say 15%, some say 20%. 15 is more common since it was around longer, I think.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No.... 20% is the new expectation. Keep in mind that servers only make about $2.50 an hour :)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Who makes these rules?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Where do you live? Where I live, the minimum wage for a worker that receives tip is $8,35...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

well restaurants get around minimum wage by saying that the server will make up the difference in tips... i'm not telling you where i live creep

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The employer is enforced to at least pay $2.50 an hour but if the employee can't match the standard minimum wage with tips then the employer is forced to make up the difference. So waiters and waitresses shouldn't complain they should know that the job is not great and salary will be minimum wage.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Here they make like 4.50

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I bet you're an ungrateful stuck up waitress

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't want to sound rude or mean or anything, but we're already paying a lot for our food, now we have to pay the waiter's salary too? That's the restaurant's job. Don't get me wrong, I always leave a tip and I love helping others, but I'm not rich and I'm already paying lots of money for my food cause to eat somewhere cheap it's probably crappy, so I'm already paying the restaurant more money than my food deserves; they should be the ones responsible to pay the waiters a good amount of money

by Anonymous 12 years ago

My grandpa doesn't tip at all unless he thinks the service is something really special because in other countries, people don't tip. He's so cheap his butt cheeks squeak when he walks.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

20%? Damn, here people usually give 10%. Only more if the service was great. Which it usually isn't. I hate tipping if they pretend I should be honoured that they are helping me.
