-115 Just because someone lives in America, doesn't mean they should have to know our language, amirite?

by Anonymous 14 years ago

it would make a lot more sense for them to have to learn english than for us to have to learn their language

by Anonymous 14 years ago

America doesn't have a set language. But knowing the best of both worlds is a good advantage. But learning English after growing up with say, Chinese, is hard. You sound pretty ignorant, we're supposed to be a diverse country.

Actually, America does have a set language: English. This post is basically like saying, "Just because someone lives in Japan doesn't mean they have to learn Japanese" (I think Japan is multicultural and grows up with both English and Japanese) or "Just because somebody is in Italy doesn't mean they have to speak Italian."

by Anonymous 14 years ago

They've actually defined Japan and Italian as official languages. USA doesn't have an official language so while learning the dominant language may be a good idea, it's not required.

True, true, true...

by Anonymous 14 years ago

Oh dang man, I really really hope you're joking about America having a set language. America is supposed to be a place where people from all around the world to come to get a better life, and things like that, not so some ignorant person would tell them to leave just because they speak English. What if our founding fathers saw this right now? I wonder what they would say.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

I said Americas set language is English. I've never seen a single textbook in Spanish for the kids who can't speak English. I'm sorry if I think English is Americas set language. And, back then, the founding fathers wouldn't have said anything. You know why? Because back then, almost every single American spoke English. I made a mistake. Sue me.

This is probably my least favorite post ever. If I went to Africa, I'm pretty sure it would be easier for me to learn Swahili, than to have all the people there learn English. So why should people from other countries decide to not learn English when they live here. It makes very little sense.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

I'm conflicted about this. It makes a bit of sense that people in other countries would learn passable English because it's emerging as an international hub language, but it's not even the official language of USA.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

But English is what the majority of america speaks. It makes absolutely no sense that people don't learn basic English, when you live in a country that speaks mostly English.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

I don't disagree, but it's still their choice.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

We speak English in America. If I went to Mexico, I would learn Spanish. If I went to Japan, I'd learn Japanese. If anyone comes here, they better know how to speak English.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

Mexicans learned english to get jobs and money from the US. Now they don't want to speak english because they own so much of America and have people brainwashed into thnking spanish should be the national language.

(Isaidwhat?): How'd you learn this? Did you sneak in and sit through one of the regional meetings of "Emigrantes Chicanos Van a Conquistar los EEUU?" (ECVCE) You know too much, now they're going to put asbestos dust in your laundry when they're cleaning your house, sabotage your carpentry when they're fixing your roof, and slip heavy metals into your fast food. OH SNAP you've been blackballed!

If someone lives in America, they better either know English or be learning it.

Suck it Trebek.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

(NO!!!): No!!! You suck it!!!

by Anonymous 14 years ago

haha ive always wanted to say that

by Anonymous 14 years ago

(NO!!!): That is what I have been waiting for someone to say my whole life.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

I'm glad we both won.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

Fuck that. I think it should be a requirement of becoming a citizen. Learn our language or gtfo

by Anonymous 14 years ago

So many things to say about this. Wow. So Americans should learn every other language in the world to accomodate the welfare seekers? The key to getting along is communication. I really don't care what language but it would be easier if the whole world spoke one and only one. Can't we all just get along?

by Anonymous 14 years ago

How do you know they're welfare seekers? Don't you need to be a citizen for that?

by Anonymous 14 years ago

People who come here looking for a better life already have enough problems without having to learn a whole new language. If they were BORN here, I think it would make sense for them to speak the language, but not if they are an immigrant. I find those Facebook groups that all my friends are joining highly offensive. Thank you, Trebek0830.

You are very welcome. I am happy to see that some people share my views on this touchy subject.

There is a reason that the U.S has no national language people need to respect that.
