+192 Whoever says that cheerleading is not a sport has obviously never seen a real cheerleading competition, amirite?

In my opinion, anything based on an arbitrary scoring system, difficult or not, isn't a sport.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I completely agree with this, except I think I have to make an exception for gymnastics.

Well I think if a sport doesn't involve either wearing spikes or catching jellyfish on a Tuesday when it's not raining out, it's not a sport

If you think high school cheerleading is a sport, you haven't seen the teams at my school... ...who can't lift their 100lb flyer. Varsity.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

at my school it looks like they are playing pattycake by themselves but synchronized. They also disturb the cheering with their no rhythm having selves

Cheerleading is only a sport when you are actually in a cheerleading competition and not some high school cheerleading team. :D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i came here to say just that :D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

But it's not a sport

by Anonymous 13 years ago

High school cheerleading, not a sport whatsoever. Allstar cheerleading, more of a sport than anyone will understand. Top Gun unlimited coed worlds 2010. Copy and paste that to youtube and you'll understand.

Cheerleading is a group of girls shouting chants and waving pom-poms encouraging their team to win. It's not a sport.

To anyone saying high school cheering isn't a sport but all-star is... tell me, aside from the games, what's the difference between HS and all-star? Any other differences are so small. I have done all-star, and I can honestly say I prefer hs. Just because we cheer at games, that doesn't make it any less of a sport.

Competition cheer is a sport, high school cheer is not.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If it wasn't for football and basketball, would this "sport" even exist?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Its a competition yes, sport no. Anything with a panel of judges isn't a sport. Its a competition, like dancing with the stars, dog shows, or american idol. Not saying its a bad thing to be a competition. Just saying its not a sport

I hate when people bring up how difficult something is when arguing whether something is a sport or not. In my opinion for something to be called a sport, there needs to be: 1. A moderate physical demand 2. A point system that is not an opinion (eg, dancing) Cheer leading does have a physical demand but the point system is based on human opinion, similar to gymnastics. The opposite is Chess, where it has a good point system but does not have a moderate physical demand.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I mostly agree but chess doesn't have a point system; it's a destroy the enemy leader type thing. Cheerleading has a physical demand but there are people who suck and just wave pom poms (equivalent to that one kid who just sits on the bench)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I did say that cheerleading has a physical demand, I never refuted that. Chess does have a point system in the sense that it is easy to see who won.

i did alstar cheerleading for 5 years and damn did they work us hard. they were like slave drivers, and by the end of the seasons we all had 6 packs. you had to put a lot of trust in your teammates, because you were lifting them 8 feet in the air while they were on top of you. i cannot think of anything that is more of a sport than that. all cheerleaders must have incredible body strength, trust, stamina, teamwork, and skill to get anywhere some athletes through balls, real athletes through people(:
