+724 Whoever thinks soldiers aren't heroes needs to think outside of their own life. Honestly, you would not be living the life you are living now if it weren't for those brave men and women risking their lives so that you can walk to school without getting a bomb dropped on you, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Although I'm sure people are gonna disagree the hell out of this post, I totally agree.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Although, if there weren't any soldiers there also couldn't be war........Hmmmm

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Do you really think people would get rid of troops? And if they did, someone would form an army. And we'd be screwed.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Costa Rica has no standing army and "unlike its neighbors, Costa Rica had not endured a civil war since 1948", but don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing soldiers.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

But Costa Rica isn't what someone would call a "powerful country". If a country like England or the US got rid of their soldiers, they'd be screwed.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That is true, but my original (somewhat tongue-in-cheek) point was that if no countries had armies then they would be fine.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Without our brave troops, we'd constantly be under major attacks. People fear our troops. If we get rid of the fear, we're vulnerable, and we'd be under attack. And if no country had soldiers, someone eventually would. And then what would happen?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Please don't get me wrong. The troops are very brave, braver than many people will ever be. They're risking their lives to save those of others, but in this particular scenario they're helping innocent people of another country more than they're helping us. They're doing honorable and moral jobs, and once they come home, al-qaeda will probably go back to the places that the troops have left. However, If the government does its job properly, we don't need the troops to stay in afghanistan to protect us. 9/11 was a terrible tragedy, and i know people who lost family members during it. But part of the tragedy was that it was most certainly preventable. The government received warnings and didn't take the necessary action to ensure our safety. 9/11 was a direct result of that. My point: our soldiers are brave, honorable people who do good work and risk their lives daily. I support them. But if the government does its job properly, we shouldn't need them to protect us from terrorists.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

My family's been saying it for years- we need to close the borders. I do support immigration, since that is how my ancestors got here and how so many people escaped awful problems in their homelands, but we are a bit too lenient. All borders should be closed, and we should have a stronger defense against Mexico. And Obama isn't really helping with any of the problems. He's apologizing to other countries for our country, and he's making us very vulnerable to such attacks. I assume you've heard of all the attempted attacks on Times Square? People are laughing at us. You do have a point, though.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Why should we have a stronger defense against Mexico? Is that where the terrorists come from? All borders should not be closed because the US has the biggest double-standard for immigration. It is so easy for Europeans to immigrate here and get their citizenship whether it's temporary or naturalization. Immigrants from anywhere else, however, that are really trying to escape poverty and tyrannical governments have the WORST time in gaining citizenship so they have to live here illegally. So what they're taking your jobs at the factory - they work harder and for cheaper wages because they need it more to get a footing in the "Land of the Free". Try stepping in the shoes of someone who has had it worse than you and then maybe you won't be so heartless.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

We need borders against Mexico because we have over 10mill illegal immigrants from there that are taking jobs Americans would LOVE to take, rather than being jobless And they're taking jobs! They can become citizens. It's difficult, but worth it. Why should our taxpayers be forced to pay for them? I do pity them, but it's not the job of our hardworking citizens to give them a home. And no one wants those jobs? Quite the contrary. There was an illegal immigrant bust at a ShopRite in New Mexico, I believe. Over 1000 immigrants were busted. ALL of those spots were filled THE SAME DAY. Don't give me that crap about no one wanting jobs.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Where did I say that no one wants jobs? I said nothing about "no one wanting jobs". By the way, if the citizenship laws were easier for them to pass THEY WOULD BE TAX-PAYING CITIZENS. So natural citizens wouldn't have to "give them a home" and be "forced to pay for them". Duh.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Illegal immigrants are getting money. Taxpayers are supplying that money because they have to. And believe it or not, 10% of American citizens are covering 97% of the taxes, so with our current government, if illegal immigrants become citizens, our very left-sided government would severely pity them and give them a lot of money. Which they do already. And the citizens would be paying low to no taxes [which is why we're in so much debt] Also, I'm not being "heartless". I'm being fair. Don't want to gain citizenship here? Don't expect to get anything. Don't want to work? You don't deserve anything. Want to work illegally? Get your ass deported. My ancestors worked hard to make a living and become citizens, and paid taxes, mortgages, etc. Why can't anyone else? No one "deserves" benefits. You earn them.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

They "deserve" a chance to work as hard as your ancestors - who came the SAME way as they do. I know many illegal immigrants and they work harder than most loafers in the country. "Don't want a work? You don't deserve anything" - "Want to work illegally? Get your ass deported" That is hypocrisy. If someone works hard, they deserve the BENEFITS of their labor, not deportation. I was not saying that people who don't work deserve benefits - because they don't. I am saying that those who come to this country should have a chance to make it just like any hard-working American. America is the Land of Dreams built by the sweat and blood by immigrants.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I do respect that they are trying to work. I'm just mad that they're enjoying the benefits, but not becoming citizens. If they want to work, by all means, work. Just become a citizen first. I understand that it's difficult and long, but some people in America DO want jobs, and it's not fair if people who don't even have to pay taxes or take on any duties of an American citizen get American jobs. Most of the people here had ancestors who worked hard to become citizens. Why do illegal immigrants think they're above that?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

We need stronger borders against Mexico because terrorists can, will, and have come in that way undetected. http://www.timesherald.com/articles/2010/06/29/opinion/doc4c2967ad67e50992691443.txt http://www.abc15.com/dpp/news/region_central_southern_az/other/terrorists-crossing-az-border-into-u.s.%3F

<reply for anonymous replying to moonshoespotter, make sense?> Obama isn't doing anything to close the boarders/put up a freaking fence because he's trying to get these illegal immigrants legal! So that way they can vote, for HIM! That way he gets more power. I do agree that most of these illegal immigrants work very hard, but there are some people who wait years to get to America, LEGALLY, and I don't think it's fair to them. i had something else to say, but i forgot it.....

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I like you! And yeah, that's what he's trying to do. He's a tyrant. He's putting a lot of extremely left-winged border-line socialist people into power. He gets more power. The Supreme Court justice he put in a while ago, from Puerto Rico, is a liberal. And the one he's trying to pass stopped military recruiters from going onto some college grounds. 2 justices? Do you know how much power he gets from that? And with a very Democrat-filled House, he can control a LOT. Which is terrifying.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

EXACTLY!!!!! and along with all the things he's done in the past, is affecting my generation! I'm only 15 and I'm already stressing over what 's going to happen when in 30ish years old

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Me too! I'm also 15, believe it or not. My mom is also scared for me. How will I pay for college? A home? A car? It's terrifying. But remember- It took a Carter to get a Reagan[who is probably rolling over in his grave right now]

by Anonymous 13 years ago

this is true... i just hope it gets better....

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If it's any consolation, but the end of his term/beginning of the next person's term, no one will want to admit they voted for him

by Anonymous 13 years ago

true again... isn't Obabma's rate for people that like him (just blanked on what it's actually called) less than 50%?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I really don't see a direct correlation between how soldiers being in Afghanistan and Iraq protect me (in the US) from terror attacks. The US being involved in these wars just makes terror groups hate us more. Acts of terrorism really only take a handful of people to pull off, and I fail to see how troops occupying a country prohibit those terrorists from strapping bombs to themselves. It's not like WWII, where Pearl Harbor was attacked by the GOVERNMENT of Japan, not some extremist group therein, so invading Japan made sense. THat being said, of course I think the women and men in the military are brave and deserve our support. Hopefully they also deserve to not be blown up or shot full of holes by terrorists, and can come home soon.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I agree completely - I support my brother and all of his fellow soldiers however I think the war is horrifically unjust to the people living in Iraq and Afghanistan.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I respect soldiers. But not war.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i'm not gonna bother with all the comments up there..haha. but let me just say that my brother is a soldier, and this post means alot to me. <3 :D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Saying soldiers aren't heroes doesn't mean no soldiers are heroes,I'm sure lots are. It means being a soldier doesn't necessarily make you a hero. Also admitting the need for soldiers is kinda admitting the flaws in human nature.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm not saying that soldiers who aren't in the front lines are not heros, but only 1/4th of all jobs in the armed forces involve combat. Just sayin. and this is coming from a guy who has a dad and granddad who was in the armed forces (infantry and field artillery, btw)
