+353 Sometimes you have to wonder how "you're welcome" ever caught on as an appropriate response to "thank you"? How does that even work? amirite?

It's simple, really. Person one gives an apple to person two person two says "thank you" person one says "you're welcome to have another apple at anytime" but shortens the phrase to "you're welcome"

Just like "thank you" was probably just shortened from "I thank you."

Buy what if you do something for someone like shoveling their driveway for free

then it's like "you're welcome to ask me for help, I'd help you any time"

What if I compliment someone, they say "Thank you", I say "you're welcome", what am I implying? They're welcome to be pretty, or wear a nice hat? Or whatever?
