Because we value things we've learned to find aesthetically pleasing instead of their essence itself, and though that's understandable, we've taken it a bit too far.

What do you mean by their "essence?" That sounds like more of a personal thing, and normally when the word "beauty" is used by itself it connotatively refers to pure aesthetics.

I know, I mean how people are more obsessed with looks than personality. And people who are more in shape are naturally more beautiful to us because of instincts and wanting to find a healthy mate and all, but I think what society's done is made us shun the people who don't meet those standards, when really it should be perfectly fine to be ugly, just harder to find a mate. idk

But like... If so many people agree with this, (and people = society?) how come the society still has such a terrible view? Or is it just the amirite-visiting part of society who has a better view of beauty :P
