+871 It's weird when adults call flip-flops thongs, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I've never heard an adult say that before, but I imagine that'd be awkward.

You have never heard anyone call them that before?

Umm wow you guys in America are weird.... Adults call them thongs because they ARE thongs, but people in your country call them flip flops now because underwear thongs became more popular... But down here in Australia, we still call them thongs. Because they are thongs, and pretty much every single person owns a pair of thongs and wears them every day of summer and often in winter, and not many people often make reference to what you call thongs, (that I know of anyway). But they WERE originally called thongs, are still that in Australia and probably other countries as well.

yeahh this persons right, flip flops sound kind of weird to me but if i went to america i guess i would use it. thongs are pretty much the only shoes worn in summer (besides rabens or barefeet) and people don't really talk about the other thong

thank you :)

Agreed, they're called thongs in Australia. Not awkward at all :)

one time my mom said to me, "i broke my thong." i freaked out in my head until she pulled out her broken flip flop from behind her back..

Yeah, here they are called thongs. Nothing weird about that. I think it's pretty naive of you not to know that. Although, it was embarassing when we went to American and my sister shouted "I forgot my thongs!" We got a few weird looks. Still, we know and respect your use of "flip flops" so you should do the same to us. After all, they were called thongs when they were first made all those thousand of years ago.

The other day my grandma came in my room and said "hey, do you wear thongs? I bought myself a pair and they don't fit, so I was just wondering if you wanted them.?" It freaked me the fuck out. Just saying. haha.

I know that what Americans call thongs, Australians call g-strings, which some people also use as a term in America.

My mom asked me to get my dad his thongs. I smiled but told her he can only wear one at a time.
