Yes, blonde and brunette stem from French words and in France "tte" or "e" at the end of a word usually makes it feminine, much like "a" at the end of a Spanish word generally implies femininity.

I accept no responsibility for if you've heard this before or if it's not as funny as you're expecting. Three men, a blond, a brunet and a redhead all work on the top floor of a skyscraper, and every day, the three sit at a table by the window and eat their packed lunches together. One day the brunet opens his lunch. "Oh God, ham sandwiches again? I swear, if I have another ham sandwich tomorrow, I'm going to throw myself out of this window." The redhead opens his lunch and finds a cheese sandwich. "I can't take any more cheese. If tomorrow's sandwich is cheese too, I will jump out of this window." The blond then opens his lunch; his sandwiches are tuna. "I am so sick of tuna!" he cries, "I will throw myself out of this window if I have one more tuna sandwich." So the next day the brunet opens his lunch and finds a ham sandwich - true to his word, he jumps out of the window. The redhead opens his lunch - he has a cheese sandwich, so he too jumps out of the window. The blond opens his lunch to reveal a tuna sandwich, so he follows the other two out of the window. I've heard the exact same joke, except it was a white guy, a mexican, and a black guy. black guy was the only one to jump out the window. at the funeral, his wife says she made him that lunch on purpose
