I don't know about stores around where you live, but for me when it says buy one get one free, if you buy one it is 50% off - unless it specifically says otherwise.

50 percent off means 50 percent off.

If you buy a shirt that is 10$ but is now 50% off, it then becomes 5$. If you buy a shirt that is 10$ and get another shirt for free, then each shirt only cost 5$. However, what if you only want to spend 5$ and buy one? You spent more with the buy one get one free...
