Words like ocean and boat, which sometimes are called "she", had the feminine gender in Latin, and took the feminine pronoun. I guess it has something to do with that. I'm not sure.

As well as other languages and their oh so lovely word genders it may be linked to how women were viewed. You'd look after and love and care for a girl so you named your car a girls name. Your wife was a bitch and unforgiving, you consider the ocean a woman. You hold it gently and spend hours with it, you call your guitar a girl.
