His death was an accident, caused by mixing up prescription drugs. If you are thinking he got multiple personality because of the Joker, he was very proud of his role, and thought it was his best acting. It didn't cause him to overdose, he accidentally did that.

It's not how he died per say, but he did struggle with getting out of his character. He was one of those actors who lives like their character outside of the movie and it really caused problems after filming.

No, I'm saying that he didn't get multiple personality.... but he was kind of troubled apparently. But that isn't why he died. He accidentally OD'd on prescription drugs, apparently nothing to do with acting.

Technically speaking, he OD'd because of his acting technique, which wasn't really a technique at all: Trying to get into character as the Joker, he locked himself alone in a room for extended periods of time. This gave him insomnia and anxiety problems. He was on prescription medication for both of these illnesses at the same time, and when he let himself off the hook for 'becoming Joker,' he smoked and did marijuana. As a combination of all these things, he OD'd and died:( incredible performance, though.

the drugs were prescription, but i don't think they found traces of marijuana. although, that would have done it.

Haha, my friends and I used to make fun of how Daniel Day-Lewis would try to get really into his characters by doing things they would. For instance, he didn't bathe (for the whole filming period) for one of his Puritan parts. XD
