+644 The square root of a number has two answers. amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No. Example: the square root of 4 is +/-2

by Anonymous 13 years ago

exactly, 2 and -2, two different answers

by Anonymous 13 years ago

But you always forget, and end up with only half the answer to your equation

by Anonymous 13 years ago

no, the square root of a number is always the positive i.e. if x is the square root of 4, then x is 2. however, if you state that x squared is 4, then x can be both +/- 2. so you have to be careful! my teacher marked me off on a test because of that once

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Exactly, it's only when you are trying to solve an equation. If it's just simply: What is the square rooot of 4, then the answer is 2. If it's: X^2=4, then the answer is X = +/-2.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

what about -1? or any negative number. There's just i.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

you forgot -i

by Anonymous 13 years ago

WELL PLAYED.

negative numbers don't have square roots

by Anonymous 13 years ago

u can actually square root a negative number...by using complex numbers. what do u people learn in school? seriously.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

and plus there are no two real numbers that when mutiplied equal a negative number

by Anonymous 13 years ago

and plus there are no two real numbers that when mutiplied equal a negative number

by Anonymous 13 years ago

exactly, there is no square root of a negative number :D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

no REAL square root.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It doesnt SAY REAL

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Two real numbers when multiplied that equal a negative number? -3 x 2 = -6... Or am I not understanding your comment? Sorry if I'm not

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Since when is this an opinion?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

it's summer. can we please not talk about this?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Amen!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The square root of a number only represents the positive number. x^2=4 has 2 answers: +/-2. But the square root of 4 is only 2.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT MATH ON THE INTERNET DURING SUMMER? JUST WONDERING.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's not summer everywhere, idiot. And some people enjoy maths. Also, I think you might have bumped your caps lock key.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

square root of any positive number has two answers, like square root of 4 is 2 and -2, as -2X-2=4 and 2X2=4 for negative integers you have to use imaginary numbers, the square root of -4 is 2i and -2i. but you only need to start worrying about square rooting negative numbers if you are continuing maths to a higher level than just year 11 and GCSE's

^^^^ bunch of nerds haha just sayin...
