late means passed on, it's more polite than dead, "the late Joe.." as opposed to "the dead Joe..."

It's weird, because in 8th grade I used 'late' in that context, while writing an essay. My teacher, who's a Language Arts teacher with her doctorate's, said she'd NEVER, EVER heard it or seen it written in that context before and didn't believe me. I had to get a dictionary and show her.. The same teacher, didn't believe me when I explained to another student that, "the boondocks of the newspaper," meant the articles that were rarely read or were obscure. Anyway, I think it's an okay word.
