Blacks enslaved white people, too. Stop pretending that slavery was a one way street. amirite?
by Anonymous12 years ago
I have heard of that happening but when did it happen?
by Anonymous12 years ago
Well, I can't be too specific, but at some points in history, such as during the Roman Empire, race was not a deciding factor in slavery. Basically, whoever lost the war was enslaved by the victors. So if a group that was black won the war, and a white group lost, then it would be blacks enslaving the whites.
by Anonymous12 years ago
race never was a deciding factor.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Did u mean that to be anonymous...?
by Anonymous12 years ago
no. Why would ask that question?
by Anonymous12 years ago
Oh it looks like you were the anon poster because they said "race never was a deciding factor". Word for word.
by Anonymous12 years ago
they said it was not during [event] i just wanted to correct them because this is the internet and we are heartless bastards
by Anonymous12 years ago
hmm, true
by Anonymous12 years ago
This is true. In many Native American tribes in history, they would fight amongst themselves and enslave which ever tribe lost.

Tens of millions of black slaves > tens of thousands of white slaves.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I'm talking about the last ~500 years or so, not ancient slavery. Tens of thousands of whites were enslaved by North Africans in the 1650s-1800s. Meanwhile, tens of millions of Africans were enslaved by whites in Europe and the Americas.
As the commenter below me said, you can't really compare ancient slavery to slavery in the modern world.
by Anonymous12 years ago
DanielJames speaks the truth, per usual. Beyond that, as someone said below, North Africans aren't black. Well, I'm not sure if that's entirely true, but North Africans weren't a part of the slave trade anyway.
by Anonymous12 years ago
It's still slavery. Just because the numbers aren't as high doesn't mean it's ok or wasn't bad.
by Anonymous12 years ago
This post is trying to minimize the mass enslavement of millions upon millions of blacks (and in doing so, their centuries long sub-human treatment and the apparent racism that still thrives today). The enslavement of whites in North Africa is negligible compared to what blacks endured.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I didn't really read it that way (mind you I'm very tired), I just thought it was saying there was more slavery than just that of black people in North America (not just the US as Canada had slaves for a while too). I thought the idea was to say how slavery was far more widespread and not just based on skin colour. The mass slavery that occurred in the states was terrible and in no way should it be ignored or undermined, but rather people should know how much slavery did (and does) exist.
by Anonymous12 years ago
You have to keep in mind that most forms of mass slavery happened a very, very long time ago, like in ancient Rome. Yes, Rome's slaves were incredibly numerous. I'd venture to say that ancient Rome topped America in number of slaves by millions. But you also have to keep in mind that the Roman Empire existed roughly two thousand years ago.
What's so significant and upsetting is that such an extreme form of slavery was happening in a very modern world, in a place that supposedly stood for freedom.

by Anonymous12 years ago
Oh, my. Thank you. *curtsies*
by Anonymous12 years ago
I think I'm in love with you.
by Anonymous12 years ago
If race wasn't a deciding factor when the Roman empire had slaves than it really isnt fair to say that "blacks enslaved whites." However when white people in america enslaved black people it was completely deliberate.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Correction: Studies show that NORTH Africans enslaved white Christians. Ever heard of the Barbary Coast? It refers to the regions that we now call Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. My parents are not Morocco, and I can assure you we are not "black". There was never a moment in history were sub-Saharan Africans (blacks) enslaved whites. Please do research before you post erroneously. Let's all grow wise.
by Anonymous12 years ago
typo. I someone mixed the two ideas of "my parents are not black" and "my parents are from Morocco". I type faster than I think :)
by Anonymous12 years ago
Anyone know where the word "slave" comes from? Before Europeans used blacks as slaves, Slavs were used . Slav --> slave. So whites have enslaved whites. It's more common knowledge that rich Africans enslaved blacks and helped the whites with the slave trade so blacks have enslaved blacks. Obviously whites have enslaved blacks.
To my knowledge, however, I have heard of no instance of blacks enslaving whites.
by Anonymous12 years ago
There are more slaves currently than there ever were during the civil war period. And race isn't a big factor in it right now, just gender. I don't know, it just irritates me that people seem to think it's only black people who were ever enslaved when its a huge problem in today's society without race.
by Anonymous12 years ago
I'm pretty sure they didn't pick the slaves cause they black. I'm pretty sure they chose them because they were from indigenous tribes who could barely defend themselves, which made it easy to kidnap.
by Anonymous12 years ago
ill be honest and say yes and they still do they are called Islamist and they enslaved us and still have slaves today
by Anonymous8 years ago
Now I am going to speak the truth even in some parts of Africa to day If two blacks make a white baby that baby or albino yes i know there is a deference but we can still have white kids to that baby is to be killed or removed because to them being white is a curse
