+197 "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear." Um... wouldn't you want them to be FARTHER than they appear. That way you avoid a driver saying, "Oh... no worries, that car is all the way over-" BAM! Amirite?

Although technically speaking, the purpose is to allow you a wider view of the road and to decrease the size of the blind spots ;)

... Maybe just make a bigger mirror? But I get what you are saying. It's just always bothered me since I was a wee lass.

It's okay, it bothered me too... until I found the explanation when I was studying for my driver's license :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ahhh. You STUDIED for your driver's license??? Whoa. I didn't know anyone did that. I surely didn't. ;D

Um... yes? Maybe it's different for you, I live in Canada. You need a minimum 80% on the written portion, I think everyone here studies (assuming they want to pass on their first try...)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You need at least an 80% on the written portion in the US as well... but it's just basic knowledge. Stuff that you just learn while in your parents car... I don't remember myself or anyone in my family studying and we all passed first try.

Huh. I remember a bunch of questions with distance and time. How much room do you have to leave between yourself and a firetruck (150m) How far away do you stop from the tracks when you're at a railroad (5-15m) When are school zones in effect (8-5) etc., etc. Most of it wasn't stuff I'd learned.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah. Come to think of it... I DO remember that stuff. I suppose I just guessed. I don't know. It was just simple, I supposed. But then I pay close attention to stuff like that in my daily life.

Actually, this has to do with the concavity of The mirrors. Like distinctions said, they want to increase vision and decrease blind spots. And mirrors are the best, most efficient way so far.

This would be a horrible idea. If the car seemed farther away you would be cutting people off, possibly clip the front of their car when you switch lanes because you think they are far away

by Anonymous 13 years ago

For fuck's sake! You're a pendantic, pretentious, pseudointellectual pain in the ass. There was no need for an "actually" in front of that post. No one said anything about why things seem further away, rather than closer or normal. The original post questioned the wisdom of having them, and the comments covered why it is, indeed, wise. You weren't correcting anyone, so stfu and go read your bible unless you have something relevant to share.
