Actually, until the early 20th century pink was for boys. It was thought of as a light shade of red, which represented strength and power. (This fact of the day is brought to you by JustASmallTownGirl.)

and blue was for girls, because it represented peace and calmness.

exactly what i was going to say. Red was also used for men because it was the colour of blood and therefore the colour for strength. It was latter changed to pink because it was believed to be a lighter shade of see and hence well lighter and less obvious. Blue was considered the colour for women and as you said it was much later that they swapped! :)

Actually the ancient Chinese did. Blue was believed to keep evil spirits away, and the boys were considered more valuable than the girls, so the boys wore blue. Sexism goes back a looooong way. But no one really knows why they chose pink for girls.

Lol, pink's one of my favorite colors. Here's the guitar of Alexi Laiho, guitarist and vocalist for Children of Bodom. http://www.guitar-stuff.net/images/reviews/alexi-600se.jpg

Originally, (early 1900's) pink was considered for boys since it was a washed-out red, which symbolized courage, and blue was for girls because it was daintier. But then they got switched around. :P

Recent studies on new-born babies have shown that girls are slightly more attracted to pink, and boys are more attracted to blue. No one knows why. I think it's bizarre!
