You're getting it wrong, see, you're not looking at the big picture. They want to crumble society as a whole and then rise to control and seize all power and create a new world where they are the supreme leader and highest power. They want to be worshipped, they want power. And are willing to bring about the destruction of the world to achieve it.

I always assumed it was some kind of teenage drama-whore thing. Kind of like, "If I can't be happy, then I'm taking the whole world down with me!"
