+469 A post that starts with "Contrary to popular belief" should have a negative score. Otherwise, it's not really contrary to popular belief, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No, it could definitely have a positive score. Actually, it SHOULD be positive, because you should be right in saying that the statement itself is contrary to popular belief.

But if most people agree with the fact, then how can it really be contrary to popular belief?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

See that's where the ending "amirite?" comes into play.

Anyone who voted YYA would have to know it's a fact. People who think it isn't would subsequently outweigh them in voting to the contrary.

"Contrary to popular belief," pretty much means, "I'm correcting you on this." It should be voted up.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes, the vote could and should be positive if it's correct, and not stupid or a repost of course. Just because many people believe something false doesn't mean that others can't know the truth, or accept the truth when they find it out.

If it was voted up then it wouldn't be contrary to popular belief, making the post wrong. But if it was voted down, then that means it IS contrary to popular belief and the post was actually right.

Contrary to popular belief, cats love dogs. You disagree, does that make me right?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm just one person, but if most people disagreed then you'd be at least half right since it would be contrary to popular belief.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No, it was an example. I mean, if I had stated a popular misconception, such as "Contrary to popular belief the banana is a berry" then they would all disagree, and the post would be correct. I could also say "Contrary to popular belief the banana is a species of dinosaur" and people would still all disagree, does that still make my post right?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The first half of your post would be correct because it's be contrary to popular belief, but the second half would be wrong because it's untrue.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

" But if it was voted down, then that means it IS contrary to popular belief and the post was actually right." No, the second is right too, because it was voted down, according to your logic at least.
