Why do we say "It's as flat as a pancake"? There are much flatter things in the world. Amirite?

It's a British thing I think, we have flatter pancakes than you do...

Well, a pancake is pretty flat.

No, who says "As flat as a pancake" anyway? We say "Would fall and be turned into a pancake" or at the very least "Flattened him into a pancake" because those are not just these flat things you bake, but scoops you DROP to FLATTEN into PANCAKE.
