+432 It should be illegal to call yourself a gamer if you think the old games, the revolutionary ancestors of today's gaming world, are stupid. I don't care if it's "art". I don't care if it's "better". The old games were and are revolutionary and genius. A gamer understands and lives by that, amirite?

I'm not saying the old games are stupid, I like a lot of them. But YOU make it seem like gamers now can't have an opinion. I like games more with better graphics, more defined controls, better stories. But, since I like new games better than the originals, and play them constantly, I guess that doesn't make me a true gamer. Pardon me for having an opinion on what I think is better. I say I'm a gamer.

Based on what you said, you are a gamer. I said you can't be a gamer if you don't appreciate old games and say they're stupid. I rarely play the old games, but I don't underestimate what they've done for modern gaming. It's like rock fans who hate Metallica. You have to appreciate the roots.

Ah, my bad. I thought you meant unless you're a die-hard fan of the classics like Mario and stuff, you can't call yourself a gamer. Because I never got into Zelda. Maybe because I just never played the original, but I never favored the concept. I definitely have respect for them, but it's not like I'm a huge fan.

I completely agree. The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Brothers, Sonic the hedgehog, Metroid, Castlevania. These old games are what made video games popular. Any gamer should at least have some sort of respect for them

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's exactly what I'm saying, but people are acting like I said to make sweet love to them every night.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You can appreciate the roots without liking them. I mean, some oldies I can dig, but others belong where they are--the past.

You don't have to be a huge fan (although I am), but just appreciate the games. These games were considered great for a reason. They not only made games popular, but they introduced some of the concepts that we still see in games today. Megaman was the first to allow the player to chose the order of the game. Zelda introduced the explorable overworld. The speed of sonic games was never seen before. In a time where most games were crap, these few games were truly revolutionary.

Does that mean I HAVE to like all old games? Because I really don't like Kirby or Ice Climbers.
