Someone told me it stood for Good As You at one point? I'm not sure how legit that is though.

I was wrong, I looked it up. The Oxford Dictionary definition of gay include being indulgent in lifes pleasures (which connects to being happy), and then it went on to be used as a term for promiscuity, which is indulging yourself physically. And everyone thought homosexuals were massive sluts that couldn't control their sex drive, and so they were labelled 'gay'.
