+670 By the time they're in highschool every kid (who is physically and mentally able) should know how to do their own laundry, make something edible and clean up after themselves. I'm not saying that parents can't help out with these things but people should have those skills down by 14/15 years old. Amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I've been doing this stuff since I was like 12...half of the kids at my school still don't even do their own laundry or pack their lunches. I'm 17 and a junior.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

Same here. I've been doing my own laundry and cleaning since I was in 5th or 6th grade. It might have had something to do with being the eldest child. Still, I find it weird that some kids can't work the washing machine (or don't, even occasionally) at our age.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

I once read somewhere that someone's son didn't even know how to boil water even though he was about 16/17.

I've been doing my own laundry since 6th or 7th grade. I pick up after myself most of the time, and even make my own meals when I have to. I've packed my own lunch since FIRST GRADE, but most of these people can't make a sandwich. /sigh

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Me too! Especially about the lunch part. My best friend is a 16 year old (like me) and her mom still makes her lunch and if it isn't the way she likes it she complains.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

People think mommy and daddy are going to take care of them forever because they're spoiled rotten. It's horrible.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

To be fair, their parents really should teach them to do these things, they shouldn't really be expected to figure it out all by themselves, for the most part at least.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

sorry didn't realize you didn't know most teenagers that age are really fucking LAZY

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't do my own laundry, but I clean up after myself and always make my own food.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't know how to do my own laundry, but that has something to do with the fact that my mom doesn't work so she does most of the housework during the day. I can do all the other aformentioned tasks though, so I'm not that bad

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I've been asking my mom to teach me how to do laundry for years, and she won't. :/ So, hence, I can't do my own laundry.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm thirteen now and I have been cleaning ever since I could walk. Okay, since I was at least seven years old. It was kind of a thing my dad made us do...and even though I just live with my mom now, I still clean up after my self most of the time. I mean, sometimes my room will get messy and I don't clean it right away, but who really does at my age? And I can make anything microwaveable (Duh. Who the hell can't?), any pasta, mashed potato's, pizza, cookies, any kind of breakfast, etc... Pretty much the common easy stuff. Not really anything that has a complicated recipe. I'm not trying to show off, it's just that since my mom's a really good cook, I wanted her to teach me to be able to cook simple things. Oh, and laundry? Well, it could be a little complicated at first but once you get the hang of it, it's basically just throwing the right clothes into a washing machine, pouring detergent, then pressing the right dial. Oh, and then drying them afterwards. You just gotta have someon...

someone willings to teach you*

I had friends that were still having their moms make their lunches by 8th grade. I had been at least HELPING to make mine since i started kindergarten >.<

by Anonymous 13 years ago

People saying they don't know how to do this or that because of this or that, but they're on the internet. Hrm...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't even remeber how young I was when I starting doing those things. Thats how young I was.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I know how to make myself food, I've been doing that for years. As for cleaning up after myself I will clean my room whenever it gets too messy on my own. No one has to tell me to. But as for the laundry, I've never had to do that. It's not that I'm lazy or spoiled, it's just that my parents have always done it. It's not like I couldn't learn in like ten minutes if I needed to. I just haven't needed to so far.

I can't do laundry, i'm a freshman.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

My brother is a junior and he never picks up anything unless he's yelled at/wants something, never makes his own food, and doesn't even go near laundry. I'm 13 and I make my own food, try to clean up, and I'm trying to learn how to do laundry, but my mom's really busy with trying to get him interested.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm a freshman too and I have done my laundry since sixth grade. All you really have to do is put your clothes in put the detergent in and press start to do laundry. Also I have made my lunch since kindergarten. I think that is just stupid if you are a high schooler who can't make their own lunch. If your parent does make your lunch and you don't like it, then get off your butt and make your own darn food(:

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I have a two cousins who don't do any of these things. Their mother does every thing for them and she works full time. They're 20 and 24 years old.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm fourteen and I can do all of this stuff. :D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I've done all this stuff on my own since middle school. It isn't that difficult.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's not even that these teenagers have to actually do it, but at least KNOW how to do it! I mean I can look after myself and it's just instinct since I was 10, but it's not like I cook and clean all day because my mum is okay doing it herself but she can rest in the knowledge that if she had to go somewhere I won't die of starvation or something like that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm sixteen and some of my friends don't even make their own lunch - one of my friend's mums even packs her PE kit for her :o. I'm a terrible cook but I can at least make pasta and stuff! Also, it confuses me when teenagers don't do their own laundry. Why would anyone want or expect their parents to sort out their dirty clothes??

by Anonymous 13 years ago

This has always been one of my mother's biggest rules, being able to care for oneself. I was cooking when I still needed a chair/stool to reach the stove; cleaning without an allowance for doing so since kindergarten or earlier; laundry in my house is done in bulk because there's so many of us, so everyone does it. My dad taught me lawn care; how to put down tile and wood floors; how to side a house and how to paint one, and how to invest my money. I've been incredibly lucky.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

My parents too. We all had to know how to cook, clean, do laundry and basic house matinence. We also all had to learn how to change a tire.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Hey at least most of you only have to do your OWN laundry. In our house, my sister and I have to do everyone's laundry (we are the only children) but who cares? It's just pushing a few buttons and putting the right amount of soap, that's all. and at least we have dryers too. I moved to another country recently and we don't have a dryer, so we line-dry our clothes, and the washer machines are alot more complicated (not as easy as the ones in the U.S where we just let it run and it does all the work.) cooking I admit is probably the most imporant thing a parent should teach their child. cleaning can kinda be learned on your own if you were thrust out into the "real world", but if you don't know how to cook, you're screwed to eating stupid ramen noodles and beans outta a can for a while. When parents spoil their kids, it's really not out of love. I think it's abuse because you don't prepare your kids for when you're not there for them anymore.
