He rejoined them when Voldemort came back because Dumbledore told him to, but he joined on his own initially when Voldemort was first gaining power.

Don't forget Snape was just as two-faced as James was when they were young. we don't see it as much because the only memories of snape's we've seen were from his point of view. It's obvious he was only nice like that around Lily but when he was with his friends he was probably just as big of a douche, calling muggle-borns mudbloods and stuff. sure James wasn't perfect but like th3don said he grew out of it. Snape did so too he just grew up a little late.

James. James's patronus was the counterpart to Lily's and James had enough sense to change to win Lily's love. Snape had to have her die to realize what was wrong. And James died for Lily.

James was literally Lily's counterpart. His animagus, a stag, is the male to Lily's (female) doe patronus. He loved her enough to fight for her even though she rejected him innumerable times. And, in the end, he died trying to save her and their child.

For the Patronus thing, there really isn't any way to tell that Lily's Patronus didn't change to a doe after she fell in love with him and found out about his Animagus form. I'm not trying to undermine your argument, Lily (ahh too many Lilys), I'm just pointing this out. I mean, it's happened before (well, technically later in the timeline of the books) with Tonks/Lupin.

I don't know. I hated James when he was in school, but seeing him afterward - with Lily and Harry - made me see how much he changed. But then there's Snape, who always had some evil in him, but wasn't much worse than James until he took Lily from him. Then, when Lily died, he changed too, and worked for Dumbledore and helped take down Voldemort from the inside. I just . . . I don't . . . UGH.

And he promised Snape that Lily would live if he become a double spy but he LIED! Plus he knew that Harry would have to die to kill Voldemort (Since Harry was the final horocrux) but he didn't bother saying anything. He might have been trying to do the right thing, but he went about it all wrong. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions...

Which would have been easily rectified if he had told Harry the reason why he wanted him to train with Snape so hard to stop Vold. from seeing his thoughts. I still think he was pretty douchey for a guy who was supposed to do all he could to keep a kid safe and alive.

Peter Pettigrew wasn't a part of anything involving dumbledore, not really it was nothing he could control, and I didnt mention anything of that part so idk where you're coming from there. And In the final book, you see that Dumbledore knew Harry had to kill himself in order to kill Voldemort. You also found out that he used Snape to get on Voldy's good side. He used Snape's love for Lily to make him do whatever he wanted, and when Snape wanted to warn Lily, James, and Harry about Voldemort coming to their house Dumbledore wouldn't let Snape, he told Snape he would protect Lily from Voldy, but if Snape warned them, he would let Lily die. Well he let Lily die anyway so he really screwed the pooch on that one, he constantly used the memories of dead Lily to keep Snape in line and it was fucking douchey. I mean for a guy who keep up a good facade of being Harry's surrogate father, it really surprised me and upset me how much he really didn't care too much for Harry. He only used Harry to kill Voldemort.

UGH I hate when people say that. James was a douchebag?? What about Snape? He was a fucking death eater. He was one of the reasons that caused her death. He called her a mudblood when she was defending him. He was mean to kinds who didn't do anything to him before even getting to know them just cause he has a horrible life. He was willing to let a 1 year old die just as long as Lily stays alive. Don't get me wrong, I love Snape so much and he's a good person, and he loved Lily so damn much; I wish I'll find a guy that'll love me like how he loved Lily. But James is a better person. oh come on we all had that elementary/middleschool/highschool enemy that we always fought with or hated, and just cause James was mean to Snape doesn't mean he was a bad person. He also really loved Lily; he never did anything bad to her. He also loved her since they were kids. He fucking died for her as well!!!

I think Severus Snape is the most complex and interesting character in the whole HP story. He made some cruel things, but one should think about how his childhood was (with his fighting parents) and than in school bullied by the Marauders including James Potter. Snape was never a threat to him, he just bullied him, so it's somehow his and his friend's fault Severus turned bad. So yeah, James imo is an idiot and a bully. The fact he died for his wife isn't anything I would emphasise because every sane husband should protect his family with his life. I pity Severus, because he made some really bad dicisions in his life and had to pay for them until he died.
