-102 It's a good idea to take a gap year before going to college, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

In terms of academic achievement studies say yes. People voting no are wrong.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No, we are not wrong. People who voted no disagree with the post and think that taking a year off before going to college is not a good idea. In my case, I don't think it would have been a good idea for me, but it might be a good idea for someone else.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well what are you taking the year off to do? Go to another country and experience other countries or work and save up money? or sit on your butt and do nothing all day?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Just because there's a possibility of people wasting this opportunity does not make this a bad idea. High school isn't a bad idea, but a lot of people "sit on their butt and do nothing all day" and eventually drop out. The school is still a good idea.

Well I moved to India for a year to work at an orphanage for Tibetan refugees as an English tutor and I work with ten other children's home and plan to raise money for my orphanage for the rest of my life. I skipped third grade so taking a year off only puts me on par with other students for age. Think I wasted my year?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

This got downvoted why?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah I was wondering that too. Lol sorry for telling you guys I work with an orphanage, clearly an awful thing to say...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well, I was gonna take your side but not since you decided to bitch me out for complimenting you on another comment.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't think you wasted you year... But I think if someone takes a year off and stays at home, without a job, and just watches tv and nap all day THAT would be wasting a year

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I can't say yes or now. For some people it's a great idea, and for others it's horrible. Now a gap year between undergrad and grad? Great idea. In fact, some MA and PhD programs won't even let you apply until a year later.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm going to repeat myself from up there, but I'm seventeen years old, I lived in Canada for the last five years. I graduated high school a year early and decided to take a year off, and move to India to volunteer for an orphanage for Tibetan refugees. I support a year off. The people who voted no way have NO idea what you could do with one year.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I understand that you support a year off. However, it is ignorant for you to say that the people who NW'd have "NO idea" what they could do with a year. It seems like you have "no idea" what people lose by taking a year off; many scholarships are rendered invalid if you don't go to college straight out of high school (unless the scholarship is based on an international "study abroad" plan), and it can be more difficult to get accepted into a college after a year off. Don't get it twisted, I'm not saying you're wrong-- I just disagree with you. There are pros and cons to both arguments here. For example, a year off might allow someone to mature more and be better prepared mentally for college than they would be if they went straight out of high school. I don't think there is a right or wrong in this argument.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Really? I was accepted to the best Journalism program in the country with a 2,000 dollar scholarship and a guaranteed spot in Res last year, and I requested a defferal and was accepted again... not all scholarships are rendered invalid, nor are your residence opportunities. So yeah, you're not losing anything and you're spending a year getting to know yourself and what you want to do with your life; even if you're not doing something like I am here. Also your username bugs me because it's my ex's name :P

by Anonymous 12 years ago

"many scholarships are rendered invalid" ... he didn't say ALL he said MANY

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Also, who cares about his username? You need to chill out and quit bitching at everyone who disagreed with the post. So you took a year off and helped in an orphanage. Good for you. It doesn't mean that other people are stupid for not taking a year off. No one is being disrespectful to you so stop being disrespectful to everyone else.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Sorry I'm really touchy about this subject, the people back home and my parents friends have been very condascending about me taking a year off school, and I'm sick of a year off being viewed as a negative thing in general. Even if you're not doing something worthwhile, people need a break

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So then you bitch out the person complimenting you. Good job.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

ahhh fack off

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I believe the word you are looking for is 'fuck.' You're trying to tell me to fuck off because I told you not to bitch at me for complimenting me? That's so cute =]

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I honestly seriously legitimately don't care anymore. I was grouchy and making a point, calm the hell down. You're probably like 12.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Actually, I'm probably older than you. And the point you were making is that you are going to bitch at the person giving you a compliment, and then get defensive about it? But yet I'm the one who needs to calm the hell down.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

While you did something good with your year off, it is something you could have done after you finished college as well. Just because I started college only a couple of weeks after graduating high school doesn't mean I have NO idea what I could do with one year. With that one year(to be completed this May) I will be a sophomore with only one semester to go until I'm a senior. I will have completed in ten months what usually takes people 2 years to complete. Did I waste that year by going to college without taking time off? Certainly not.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

So I should have gone to University when I was barely 17? I think I'm too young to go right into University, and all this year has done is re-enforced how much I want to go into Journalism and what line of work I want to go into after I graduate, I also get to work with the most incredible kids I've ever met in my life. Some people need to work too, before they can afford University fees... do you have a loan or are your parents paying? I worked for three years of school and every summer, and with that and my scholarship I can pay off my first two years already. When you're done school you need to start your working life, a lot of people won't take this opportunity when they're in massive debt.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Ok, chill. No one is saying you're wrong. People are saying that a lot of people who decide to take a year off before college don't spend that year doing anything productive. You seem like you did something really worthwhile, but many people don't do anything like that.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Did I not just say you did something good with your year off? Don't bitch at me for giving you a damn compliment. I worked three years of high school and am still working right now. I already started my 'working' life.
