+514 It's weird to think that when you're looking at the stars, you're essentially looking millions of years back in time, amirite?

Even the light that you're seeing took four years to get here.

I'm pretty sure it didn't take the light 4 years to get from my lamp to my eyes...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

From the stars.. When did I mention a lamp..

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I can't see any stars from where I am. You said the light I'm seeing, which would be the light from the lamp in my room.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Okay.. But this post was about stars so I would imagine you'd be able to put the two together.

If you're talking about the sun, light from there takes 8.31 minutes to get to Earth.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No. Four years.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Really? Can you explain to me why? I'm not sure how you got that number.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's just a fact.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Here's how I got 8.31: The Earth is on average 149,597,870,700 meters from the sun. Light travels 300,000,000 meters per second. 149597870700 / 300000000 = 498.66 seconds, which is about 8.31 minutes.

I'm talking about STARS. not THE SUN. not A LAMP... STARS! jesus, people. read.

I said "If you're talking about the sun, light from there takes 8.31 minutes to get to Earth." Then, you said "No. Four years." as a direct reply to my comment. Therefore, I assumed you knew I was talking about our sun.

it didn't show that part on my iPod. But anyway, stars are much farther away from earth than the sun. The sun itself is a really close star. Some stars are billions of lightyears away.

I hate thinking about it because it (please excuse my MLIA language) blows my mind. To think that most of the things we see every night in the sky probably don't even exist at the moment...

I love the feeling.
