I feel bad for the Duggar kids. The older ones will have to raise the younger, and there will inevitably be some that will be neglected by their parents.

I agree to a point. They also believe in helping other people so a lot of times they use their huge family to help other people, such as travelling to El Salvador. So originally it seems selfish, but they do try to give back.

Well when exactly when you are having kids should it become considered selfish? After 6? 7? Is the government just supposed to limit the number of children a family can have?

People should just use their common sense. I find it very hard to believe that all of those children are getting as much attention as they should be. Those poor older girls are stuck taking care of the younger children and just the way that family lives seems really messed up and sheltering.

I wasn't saying they are using common sense. Actually, I do believe having that many kids is unwise. I just do not believe there should be restrictions of any kind on having a certain number of children just because they are orphans in the world and that it is difficult to determine at what number does it become "selfish".

First, I don't get how Michelle Duggar is more selfish than any other mother that has children of her own. Second, procreation is the ultimate expression of love between a man and a woman, and to call a woman "incredibly selfish" (ignoring the father, interestingly) for engaging in that expression is absurd.

She's selfish because she and her husband can't possibly give all those children the love, attention, and encouragement they need to grow into healthy adults. The Duggars are just continuously creating stunted children that will be unhappy and neglected.

i understand why you think that would be the case but honestly you have no proof of that. i grew up in a big family, too (not even close to that big, though), so i always get asked my opinion on this & have given it a lot of thought. the fact is, it isn't about the number of children you have, it's about how the family functions as a whole. an only child, one of three kids, one of eight kids, or one of twenty kids could turn out totally normal or totally messed up--you can't predict based on the size of the family.

If we're not allowed to berate women for choosing not to have kids, why berate women for choosing to have a lot of kids? They're two extremes of the same concept. It's her body, and her and her husband are happy and they have a strong, stable family. Seriously, it's not selfish at all.

it's not selfish. She's too old to be having children now though. But just because there are orphans doesn't mean that women can't raise their own children. Unless you want to say women who dont want any children are also selfish since there are tons of orphans.

Saying that she is selfish because she has 20 children is like saying that childless women are selfish because they are not sustaining population. Also, you can't base any thing on the fact that she miscarried, my mother miscarried 3 times before I came to be. It doesn't mean that she is selfish for trying again. Not to mention that adopting a child is a very long, difficult proccess, and isn't suitable for every person. Saying she is selfish for not adopting is like saying America is selfish for helping countries like Japan and Hati after their disasters, when we still have people suffering from our own disasters. If the children are happy, and to me, it seems that they are, then leave their mother alone.
