+347 There is a big difference between racism and racial stereotyping. Saying all Mexicans play soccer isn't racist (even if it is stereotyping), whereas telling someone they can't join a soccer team because they aren't Mexican is, amirite?

My school had this weird guest speaker once who talked about how racism is judging someone by their looks or race, basically just stereotyping. Then for the second section of it he talked about how all black people talk differently than whites, and how when they get scared they "resort back to their native tongue" and say things like "you ain't got no money" instead of "you don't have any money"

"Their native tongue" I'm so glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read that.

How can people disagree with this? This is fact. It's like saying there's a difference between water and a taco

by Anonymous 11 years ago

What are you talking about? They're both the exact same thing.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Racism and racial stereotyping or water and a taco?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Water and tacos.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

No water and tacos are different because a taco is delicious

All Mexicans are poor. Yay, I'm not being racist!

THANK YOU!

Well...if you said something like all Mexicans play soccer because that's the only thing their brains are capable of doing, that can be considered racism as well as stereotyping.

Ism is a prefix meaning pertaining to, so technically it is racism to say a trait pertains to a certain trait. The question is weather or not it's racist.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yeah. Oops.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

So saying all black people are stupid isn't racist...?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

So what if there's a difference, it's still offensive to people.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well I feel like racial stereotyping is one aspect of racism.

The definition of racism according to Google: "The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race". How is that different from racial stereotyping?
