+981 Cheerleading at most schools isn't a sport; it's the most annoying girls at the school jumping around trying to get attention. But when impressive gymnastics are integrated into the routine and girls are sent flying 30 feet into the air to do flips and shit, then cheerleading is a sport. amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

the definition of a sport is when you use physical activity, therefor cheerleading is a sport.no matter what level of difficulty

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oh wow, I'm SO glad I don't know you in real life. Do you even like yourself? 'Cause you're kind of a bitch. Besides, the kind of cheerleading that just involves attention whores dancing around like sluts isn't physically exerting, so it's not a sport. They don't work up a sweat.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I feel like you overreacted a bit. If you had stuck to the second sentence, it would be a reasonable debate.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah you're right but it's the internet and I'm kind of a bitch on here. Besides, that person was annoying.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Gotta respect the honesty.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

"Do you even like yourself? 'Cause you're kind of a bitch." Irony; Your comment has it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm on the school walking team!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Don't forget locker-opening and pencil-moving teams~

by Anonymous 13 years ago

by that definition, ballet, writing and walking are sports, because they all require physical activity.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

ballet is an art form, but its way harder than some sports like golfing and bowling.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I would have to contend with your assertion that ballet is "way harder" than some sports. I am well aware that ballet requires an immense amount of time and dedication, but some people might find it easier to learn or do than other things. For all we know, the prima ballerina of some ballet performance has difficulty making a strike bowling. It's all relative.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Golfing and bowling are hard sports, actually. You make just one mistake and you can cost yourself a win.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

and annonymous- it depends what level I suppose. Although ballet dancers have to suffer rips and blisters on their feet that are painful to walk on. When I said ballet was harder, I meant more physically demanding though not more challenging. It's just that to be a ballerina you need to practice for years and years.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yea, by that definition, pretty much anything is a sport. Writing, talking, walking, anything!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I agree completely! The cheerleaders at my school, though, do competitive and shit, so their stuff is like mind-blowing when I watch it. They definitely have some serious stuff going on.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Cheerleading is sexist. The only reason cheerleading was created was that girls couldn't actually participate in sports, so it ended up being, "Oh, hey, I have an idea, how about the girls just stand there and cheer for the guys?" I agree, competitive cheerleading should be considered a sport, but simply cheering at MEN'S sporting events is an antiquated system that shows the implication that men are superior to women...and one that is regularly enabled by high schools, universities, and professional sports leagues. That is my problem with cheerleading, not the fact that it's not terribly strenuous physical activity.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

There's a man on my cheer team.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's totes me.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I totes love you!!!!!!!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

IS YOUR NAME TYLER? No. Damn i wish he was you. ._.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

cheerleading started off with only men. It wasn't until the 20's that women got involved.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I honestly don't think cheerleading is a sport. I'm not saying anything like "cheerleading sucks blah blah blah". I don't think dancing is a sport either, but it's still respectable.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What about gymnastics? They flip, twist, and do splits 15' off the ground, using the sheer power of ab muscles and leg muscles. It's difficult to do gymnastics in the air. I've never done it, but you need to trust your team and your muscles to not give out.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Gymnastics is a sport, so I guess that's a good point.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If they start calling Cheerleading gymnastics, then I would consider it a sport. Right now I consider it an athletic activity.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Cheerleading and gymnastics are totally different, gymnastics is many times more difficult and there are four events, not one.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Cheering at sports event that is just cheering is not a sport. Competitive cheerleading, with routines and gymnastics should be considered a sport.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

dance is an art form. however, I am on a dance team, which I think, when done competitively, makes it a sport.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

this reminded me of The I'm on a boat song because of the doing flips and shit part ha ha

by Anonymous 13 years ago

ha ha yeah so true

by Anonymous 13 years ago

K so.... People are gonna hate me for this, but it is a website for opinions, this I will share mine and maybe add a little sass. FIRSTLY cheerleading is a sport and so is dancing. I do both. Secondly cheerleading is a mix of gymnastics and dancing. Next, not all cheerleaders are sluts. Say hello to me, I'm in the middle part of the "pyramid" at my school, and play 3 instruments and am a straight a student. I've got to point out though that the dancing cheerleaders do is easier than dancing dancers do and doesn't involve too much. Yes were trying to get attention, BECAUSE ITS CALLED CHEER LEADING as in leading the cheers. We wAnt people to cheer with us. And stunts are a way to catch the audience's eye. So were not all sluts and don't give all the credit to gymnasts.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I agree. My older sister is a cheerleader, both competitive and for school. She has to do tons of preparation and whatnot. And loads of times she's been injured while cheerleading. It's definitely a sport, and I think there's a reason why the OP posted this anonymously.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeah, there's hours of practice, and it's pretty dangerous actually. and yeah, it's def a sport and there probably is a reason....

by Anonymous 13 years ago

cheerleading def. has a bad rep, and i think it's really cool and it is a sport, and really hard to perform your tumbling routines. however, gymnastics deserves more credit because it's harder.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i agree, its difficult, and has a bad rep, but it def is a sport. and tumbling is one of the most fearful things i've ever had to get over the pre-nerves for. and i agree about gymnastics being harder. and i think dance is harder also, because dance has form and different flexibility, i don't know much about gymnastics, so i won't speak about it.but like i said, it IS a combination of both

by Anonymous 13 years ago

no, you're right it is. I have a little bit of experience in all 3, mostly dance, and I think gymnastics is the hardest but it's my opinion. I totally agree with you

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeah, well theyre different so you can't really compare. what kind of dance?(:

by Anonymous 13 years ago

true. I do jazz and hip hop competitively, and I just started ballet for the first time since I was about 6. I think I'm best at jazz though.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

oh cool, i do jazz and tap&i'm trying to convince my parents to let me do hiphop but i do so many other things, they think its too much on me, cause im taking hard classses this year.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeah I totally understand. I'm way overbooked lol. Tap that is so cool, I love to watch it but I am awful so I dropped it years ago.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeah, i'm really into music, like i play 3 different instruments. and i loveeee the sounds cause theyre all little beats and i'm just getting back into dancing now cause i stopped for a few years to focus on school. worst. decision. of. my. life. cause i lost soooo much. i always wanted to learn hip hop and like be able to be at a dance and just throw some hip hop moves out there. like thatd be awesome for me, and i've taken the other ones before, but never hip hop. =/ and my parents said 2 dance classes is expensive enough, so i applied for a job on the weekends to pay for my car, but im thinking maybe i can pay for the class too... idk, they prob wont let me

by Anonymous 13 years ago

dance classes are really expensive. and i know what you mean, i stopped dance a few years ago and as much as i loved returning, it was difficult. I'm sorry you're in that situation but you should practice on your own if you can't get to classes!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeah, i'm in a class with girls like 4 years younger than me.. the good part is me and my friend and this other girl, we're all like older, so we're gunna have a solo in the middle of the tap class(: and i would..but i wouldn't know what to do, cause ive never taken any classes in hiphop before...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeah, I just started ballet and I'm with girls years younger than me and it's odd, but I don't mind. If you want to start hip hop you could! Congrats on your solo as well

by Anonymous 13 years ago

thanks(: and how would i start hip hop &yeah, i don't really mind being with the younger girls, because i'm not looking to get really serious about it, i'd only be able to go for 2 years after this, and its just a hobby. theyre reallu good so theyre on my level, and i don't need another thing to stress about, just a hobby. and i used to be AMAZING at ballet, but i hated it with a passion, it was wayyy too slow for me.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

aww well at least you know you're really talented! lots of girls would kill for that. I enjoy ballet but I'm new at it and I really stink. lol

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeah, thats probably how i would feel in hip hop..and ive done ballet since i was 2, soooo yeah. thats why like all my teachers begged me to go into competition the first year i had them.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

lucky lucky! I'm still in the beginning stages of ballet

by Anonymous 13 years ago

oh well goodluck! i think im gunna switch the jazz to hiphop cause i went to jazz last night and every combination that the teaacher makes up is like step step double piroute step kick shanay turn step step and she'll just chanfge the feet. so im like wtf??? and its hard cause i can barely do a piroute anymore let alone a double. and everyones got them down. so i might keep the tap and see if i can try the hip hop..

by Anonymous 13 years ago

wow yeah my pirouettes need major work. good luck with the switch!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

thanks!(:

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Sports have teams. Those girls are competing against each other all the time.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

you could say the same for football if you want to go the stereotipical route...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The cheerleaders at my school don't do any gymnastics or whatever. They just sort of jump up and down, say a few rhymes, and wave their arms. :/

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's what the cheerleaders at my school do, too. And, the cheerleading team is made up of all the most annoying girls at my school.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah same here. Most of the girls on the cheerleading team are seriously backstabbing bitches.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yup, pretty much. The only time I actually see them do something is at pep rallies. When we actually have football games, no one pays attention to them because they're focused on our band. :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Haha same here. Last Friday we had a football game, and my friend & I were talking about how they need to just go away so we could pay attention to the band, haha. :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Cheerleading is a sport. Clapping and throwing your hands around a bit while singing the school song isn't...which is what my school squad does.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I doubt most people know what cheerleaders go through. Did you know that during a routine it is almost impossible to breathe? Because you're screaming and moving at a face pace at the same time. Too many girls on this website post this bullshit when honestly no one can say shit about something that they themselves don't know from personal experience.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

. . . The cheerleaders at my school don't even actually cheer. They clap and move their hands around and occasionally kick to music. Every once in a while they'll do an actual cheer but it's one of those 'we say something, you say something' things and they breathe plenty.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

the cheerleaders at my school do complex tumbling routines, compete regularly and are nationally ranked. do they wear teeny skirts and wave pompoms? yes.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I think basketball and football cheering would be easy todo...now COMPETITIVE cheerleading looks awesome!!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Don't bring gymnastics and dance into this! Cheerleading is a combination of gymnastics and dance, (some have more dance moves, some more tumbling moves, some mostly stunting which is NEITHER) but gymnasts and dancers, unless they are also cheerleaders, have nothing to do with cheerleading.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

the cheerleaders at my school you have to have respect for they are hard core! i hate the girls themselves but the stuff they do is amazing! they work hard and its easy to see it takes a lot of strength do some of those things!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Lucky you! They don't do that at my school.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeah its really cool to watch. my school has so many cheer titles because of them there just that good. i don't mean to sound like i'm bragging but my school is the best in my area most sports titles, highest academics, best teachers and the highest student body. i guess it's because were the only catholic school in the area.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

the cheerleaders at my school think running a mile and 50 crunches is like the worst thing ever so school cheer at MY school is not a sport but at other schools they actually do work hard

by Anonymous 13 years ago

"doin flips n shit" the dolphins splashing gettin everyone all wet, but this ain't see world, this real as it gets! I'm on a boat motherfucker don't you ever forget! That was the only thing going through my head as I read this

by Anonymous 13 years ago

exactly

by Anonymous 13 years ago

poop faces

by Anonymous 13 years ago

you all should see the cheerleaders at my school if you don't think it's a sport. they go to the weight room for at least 3 hours a week and run a mile and a half every day before practice anda do conditioning workouts at the end. then during practice they flip and tumble, dance, and stunt(which although there aren't many comments about, it's way more difficult than it looks) plus they do it in fornt of others with smiles the whole time.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Go to cheer camp and try your hardest everyday, then come back here and tell me its not a sport.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

technically, a sport requires a definitive way to keep score, like points and what not, but cheerleading, as far as I know, has no accurate way to determine the "score." It's based off of judges opinions.

thumbwhore: 1000th voter

by Anonymous 11 years ago

yes

by Anonymous 9 years ago

Why are we the most annoying girls in the school? But yes competitive is a sport but sidelines are more support. Kinda like the difference between playing baseball and playing catch
