+434 The saying 'there are plenty of fishes in the sea' doesn't make sense. Why fishes? They smell bad and don't look good. Why not something cuter like polar bears or 'There are plenty of kangaroos/koalas in Australia', amirite?

The plural for fish is fish.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

On dictionary.com it says both fish and fishes.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You people are retarded fish is used for the plural of one type of fish, whereas fishes is used for talking about many types of fish.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

thank you for clarifying that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Fishes is used to describe more than one species of fish.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

they both work stupid

I just looked in The Concise Oxford Dictionary, fishes isn't in it.And i think it's just a bit more reliable than an online dictionary.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ok, well. The American Heritage Dictionary's fourth edition says otherwise. To tell you the truth I'm not really sure about this. Half of my teachers tell me I'm right and the others insist 'fishes' don't exist. I'm just sticking to fishes because that's what my primary school teachers taught me. Also, not all dictionaries agree to this.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

sorry, I meant "'fishes' doesn't exist." :x

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Because there are way more fish in the sea than koalas in Australia

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah, good point.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

And polar bears in the arctic.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

true... But how about birds in the sky? There are a lot.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

But the expression would kinda suck if they started to say all the things that are as numerous

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes! Haha. I just don't like fishes.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The expression corresponds to "making a catch" or "he's quite a catch."

by Anonymous 13 years ago

thank you for clarifying that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

uh, cuz there ARE plenty of fish. Koalas are endangered, there are only a few thousand (maybe a few hundred) in Australia

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeah, I get that. I just don't like the fact that dateable people are being compared to fishes.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Kangaroos in Australia is fine. We've got millions of them.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Good to know! At least they're much more adorable than fishes.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

fish is the plural of fish ...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It is fish as it is more for men to say. As womens bits are smelly. Of all the expressions this one is the least problematic. You have to use bait to catch a fish then when you catch one reel it in and if you manage it is yours. Such is dating. Of course there are people who cheat with dynamite and get several low quality fish much like chubby chasers.

Do you think the concept of mermaids came about from someone who took this saying a tad too literally? (MyqKaplan)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Polar bears will rip your head off, sweetie. That'd not a good choice, either.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

the point of that saying isn't to just compare humans to fish, it's a metaphor as if you've caught a good fish but then accidentally let it go or lost it; there are always new ones to catch

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It can't be polar bears because there AREN'T plenty of them anymore.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well the other animals are kind of endangered.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Probably cause there is a shit load if fish
