Well it probably depends on the tone of voice you use. I mean, a person could say "nice hair" or something, but still be being extremely disrespectful. It's not what you say, it's what you mean and how you say it. And yes, your parents know you well enough to know what you mean to say. Unless they only adopted you like six months ago or something. But I doubt that's the case here.
