Actually the US has a 200 billion barrel oil field in North Dakota. That alone is enough to make us energy independent. That's not counting the reserves in Alaska and off shore, and our natural gas reserves with we also have plenty of. The reason we import so much is because the people who run our country won't let us use our resources and forces us to buy oil from overseas.

name for me some people/countries that are standing between us and oil right now that we're mad at and attacking. since the OP said it has nothing to do with the war, that rules out those countries then.
