+416 It's actually kind of upsetting to see people post *I wish the dumb/slow/disabled/lisp/stuttery* kid wouldn't read in class. It's exactly this type of crap that makes people feel worse about themselves through school, they are there to learn the same as you, so why shouldn't they participate? amirite?

Learning and participating are different, they can be taught to read/speak better at a different time. Reading out loud is almost like showing off your reading skills, they should just practice at home or something until they're better at it. It doesn't exactly help other people to learn when a kid takes 10 minutes to read half a page. By the time someone else reads, people will have probably forgotten what they were reading about in the first place. :P Anyone saying that it's annoying having to listen to someone who can't read out loud try to, is just expressing their opinion. In real life I'm sure nobody would go up to someone and tell them they suck at reading, 'cause then they probably would feel bad. But really, it's kind of like if someone who was terrible at sports was trying out for the school team... If you're not good at it, don't put yourself out for judgment, just practice until you are good...

The reason they shouldn't read is because if the class is reading together and a really slow reader goes, then the next person gets in trouble for not knowing where slowass left off because they're three pages ahead.

well obviously you haven't been in a class when a really slow reader reads. Like the kind that doesn't know how to pronounce a word like "lightbulb", and that actually pauses for a minute after a period. It is pure torture. Then you end up drifting off because you can't pay attention, and you learn less.

That sports analogy was crap. Sport at school is an extracurricular activity. Reading is not, everyone has to learn it, that's why they teach it at school. Hence the kids who need the most help are asked to read in class more often that not.

Something tells me you're the "dumb/slow/disabled/lisp/stuttery" person.

No I wasn't. I'm just not a bigot, crazy concept I know.

hear, hear. but this still doesnt excuse the perfectly healthy girl who doesnt pick up that the shakespeare verse shes supposed to be reading is in rhyme and iambic pentameter, and therefore if you dont know the word it should be pretty freaking easy to pronounce it right.
