Luck, or skill? Not to sound like the douchebag I know this is gonna make me sound like, but I catch all my Pokemon in either a Pokeball, or whatever ind of ball is required for an area (ie; safari ball). Partially because it makes it more gratifying when I succeed, and partially so I have a physical reference in case someone doesn't believe just how worthless my time is.

How would the type of Pokeball you throw be any indication of skill? The skill portion of catching a legendary is getting it as weak as possible before throwing a ball, and then tanking it until one of your throws succeeded. If anything, using regular Pokeballs on legendaries shows that you know less about the game. That being said, I threw Ultra/Great Balls at Rayquaza for fucking years, and the second I ran out and switched to Pokeballs, I got him. :l

I never said it had anything to do with skill. I just prefer having them all the in same kind of ball. Even having to use Safari balls bugs me to the point where I often breed safari-exclusive Pokemon, and either release the non-Ditto parent, or store it in a special box. And I'm not really worried about my kind of Pokeball showing my skill level, as I can usually offset that with my almost encyclopedic knowledge of the first 4 generations. One time, in the same game, I caught Zapdos in my last Pokeball out of 50 something, and Articuno in my first.

Your first sentence was 'Luck, or skill?'. But yeah, I only use Pokeballs on the Pokemon that I use online, but more so because I don't like all of the different animations (in generation III and onward). I'll use stronger Pokeballs for Pokemon that sit in my box.

Oh yeah, that... I have this habit of saying "x? or y?" in a really douchebaggish voice in scenarios where it obviously doesn't make sense. In fact, a lot of my humor has to do with making myself sound like an asshole. I wonder how I have friends...

I remember when I had pokemon silver when I was 6, i was able to catch Lugia with a pokeball on the first try. And it still have like a quarter of its health left. Looking back on it, i was like "The fuck did i do that?" and I ran into a shiny Slowpoke and I was like "the fuck is this?" And shut off my system thinking that something was going wrong. Looking back on that, I was just like ridiculously pissed at myself. These two experiences were both extremely memorable considering I never heard of the word "fuck" back then, so how i knew how to use the word correctly is beyond me.

I managed to get Latias with a Pokeball. That little fucker never stayed put.
