Especially when they're family, it gets pretty awkward

if you are refering to FB, this post is kinda outdated because around fall 2010, FB put a 'not now' option. its a way to ignore a friend request without deleting it. the person can't resend a request because they will see 'Awaiting Friend Confirmation'
