I think they make $80,000 in NYC. At my school, some teachers make less than $50,000

You're crazy if you think garbagemen make 80 grand a year. That's in the top 25% of American incomes (Do you really think 75% of people are turning down the opportunity to make more money?) and well above the average salary of college graduates. From my research it's more like $30,000. But the average salary of a teacher is around $50,000.

I looked it up. NYC garbagemen make $80,000 a year. It's less in other areas, but in the NY area, $80,000 is more than what some teachers make.

You could say the same thing about teaching. But it also says the maximum salary a worker could make is $67,000. The top 10% of teachers make $75-80,000 (according to TIME).

Garbage men don't get 3 months in the summer off, plus winter break, plus spring break. I think teachers get paid just fine for the amount of time they work.

this was definetly in a movie, the teacher was all " your going to end up being a garbage man" and the student went all math on him and said " well according to my calculations ill make like 7000 more than you a year" and then he walked out of the class i forgot the name of thre movie tho

The garbage men/teacher thing definitely isn't true where I live, but what about professional athletes and anyone in the entertainment industry vs doctors, scientists, teachers, or people that actually have a purpose?

If people are willing to pay for athletes, entertainers, etc. why shouldn't they earn it? It's all about supply and demand. People demand a lot of it and there are very few people who can supply those talents. They fully deserve what they're paid.

I think both garbagemen and teachers deserve money. Many Idaho teachers are underpaid, especially for the long hours most work and how much most actually care for the kids.

I was helping one of the first grade teachers out after school the other day and we were watching little kids, and before I left she said, "This is why you become a doctor. Or a lawyer. Becoming a teacher takes years of education and hundreds of thousands of dollars. Garbage collectors just have to show up. If people knew that, I think they would rather be garbage collectors if given the choice.

No, I think that more people would rather be teachers, it's a more serious career path that requires less physical strength, a lot of people consider teacher as a job where as you never really hear people saying they want to be a garbage collector.

The reason you don't really hear it is because people assume that the pay is terrible since that's how our society portrays it. I'm just saying that if they knew they could make more money with significantly less effort and stress, they'd rather be garbage collectors. Although it's very subjective and varies according to your point of view, people tend to choose the path that will yield the greatest reward at the least cost. I mean, if you knew you could make just as much money being a mailman as being a surgeon, would you really shell out the half million dollars and spend 8 years of your life going to college and med school? Or would you rather go to the local post office and pick up a job application?

Well yes, maybe, but they don't know that, so they'd rather become teachers. And I still think that actually a lot of people would rather become doctors, they would rather be in a profession that is considered more respectable, have a solid career path that they can move up in, and do something that they are more passionate about and consider to be more worthwhile.

That's why I said that cost and reward are subjective. Some people might consider the praise of others and the pleasure of doing something they love to be a greater overall reward. Some people would consider not having to spend the time and money on med school to be a greater reward. Anyways, this is kind of straying from the point I was originally trying to make. I was just trying to say that garbage men aren't paid more just because no one wants to do their job. Under that same principle, janitors and migrant workers should be making millions. It has more to do with the fact that garbage men are employed by the private sector whereas teachers are paid by the government.
