Or when that person is super creepy. And you really, really don't want to interact with them.

or if you just broke up with someone and u have to do an entire project with them!

Story of my life at the moment. It's even worse when you can already tell you're going to be doing the whole project by yourself because your partners are just too stupid and irresponsible to be reliable.

I've been stuck with all of the bad ones, so I know how much it sucks. I know what it's like to have a partner who sleeps through the class/lab, then expect you to give them all the data. I know what it's like to have the asshole partner who thinks that they know everything, when in fact they don't. I've also been with a lab partner who continually adds things or messes with the procedure/experiment when I'm not looking and ends up ruining everything...and then blames it on me for not paying attention. And I know what it's like to have the great partner who actually collaborates with you on things and you get a killer project done. I'm a graduate assistant who teaches 5 lab sections, so I just have my kids pair themselves up. I find it's easier that way and it helps to remove a lot of the hostility between potentially problematic partnerships.

Some instructors do it to encourage people who don't normally talk to each other to work together and overcome differences. When you get into the professional world, this type of skill is very important to your success.
