+78 English people: when others say you have a British accent instead of an English one it's a bit annoying, but you don't want to say anything in case you appear rude, amirite?

As a non-European, I can assure you that most of us don't think Europe is all the same. Whether we use the term European or not depends on the context.

Indeed! I mean, it isn't hard to distinguish between a Northern Irish accent, a Scottish one, a Welsh, and an English accent. Don't lump us all together :)

A lot of people here in the US think that English and British are just synonymes. They're not trying to lump you together, they just don't realize there's a difference.

If I hear a guy with an Irish accent and a guy with a Scottish one talking, I can tell which is which, but if I hear either one by itself with no comparison, They sound the same to me.

All English accents are British but not all British accents are from England.

It's the same as British people who try to speak with an American accent and speak with a thick southern drawl. That's not an American accent, that's a Texan/other southern state accent, but surprise, surprise, that's part of America.
