-28 God is as fictional as Santa, amirite?

St Nicholas was a real person..

"Was". I never said St. Nicholas wasn't real, I said Santa was fictional. And a man who currently, this day, lives in the north pole with elves in a toyshop, who flies a sleigh dropping presents to every house in the world in a night, is fictional, made up, not real.

Yeah ok. Santa has occurred as a fiction in a single society (Western Christianity). The concept of a god of some form has occurred thousands of times, and there is no civilisation that I have heard of that has not evolved some concept of a greater being. Thats not necessarily proof in itself, and don't get me wrong I am not a Christian or belonging to any religion, but Its strange nonetheless.

I wouldn't say it's strange that almost every civilisation has developed the notion of a higher power(s). Human's have always strived to understand the unexplainable, and to fear death less - God fills the gaps. Also natural selection wise, the fact that religion is widespread and lasting is part of altruism: People are safer in groups, religion brings people together.

Is science not just another effort to fill the void in knowledge? I agree about group safety, although you could say that the human group instinct has caused every war in history, and now threatens the species entirely. My personal view is that I accept the majority of popular science, but do not see it as something that rules out the existence of something unexplainable. I don't think that there is any sort of conscious god, I just cannot comprehend the worlds existence as a freak occurrence.

Yes, science is an effort to fill the void in knowledge, that is what it's about, trying to find out as much as we can about the universe we live in. Science doesn't claim to have all the answers, it's ever changing and updating itself. Scientists don't give up when they haven't figured something out and say "Well we don't know yet so God must be the answer"

But many scientists disregard the possibility.

Santa is real though <3

your examination of the existence of God is usually based on Judeo-Christian sources, which typically don't make sense. so I dont blame you for rejecting that belief, becuase I reject it too but I don't reject that there is a God all together. so you should check out other religions to see if you reject the totalllll concept of God, or just the one you're exposed to

God isn't fictional though, there is scientific evidence that points towards intelligent design (the big bang theory, anyone?) and many "pillars of atheism" for example Charles Darwin's tree of Life, Haeckel's embryos, the Stanley Miller Experiment, or the "missing link" the archaeopteryx have either not been proven as true, or been proved false.

Actually disregard what I just said, God is totally fictional LOL
