It's because playing bass guitar is much easier than playing guitar. In a lot of music, the bassist plays about 1-3 different chords.

any basic person can just hit the roots of the chord that the guitarist is playing, but when you try to change it up with inversions and complimenting bass notes, then it is difficult. not to mention slap bass. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHdN_O5k3WM
