Ignorance can be cured, stupidity is forever.

But stupidity I can deal with, ignorance I can't stand.

From Wiktionary: "Ignorance: The condition of being uninformed or uneducated. Lack of knowledge or information." You're probably thinking about the way that people emotively use the word ignorance to describe obnoxious viewpoints stubbornly held, when in reality all it is is an innocent lack of knowledge, nothing more. I'm ignorant because I don't know what the highest mountain in Malawi is, I'm ignorant of that fact. There's nothing about that which is hard to stand. Stupidy on the other hand is much harder to define but the emotive use of the word ignorance to describe people who refuse to learn or open their minds is probably closer to the definition of stupidity.

I see your point, but people can choose to remain uniformed, and thus ignorant about things that they really ought to know. That's what I have a problem with.

When a person decides to stay uninformed they are in fact stupid. Stupidity is seen in a person when they know better yet they do the wrong thing. For example: don't touch the stove because it is hot and you'll burn yourself yet they still do it. The movies Jackass are a perfect example of stupidity.
