+663 It's annoying when a teacher asks you to read out loud in class and there's tons of curses in the book. Like what, am I supposed to say them? I thought this was school, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

that's when you have fun coming up other/fake words to say instead

I was reading a passage the other day and it said "hell" in it...i stopped and was like "can i say this" and everyone laughed at me :(.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I’ve done that. I was like *looks at teacher* “Do I say it?”

by Anonymous 13 years ago

hey i posted this too like last week and it didnt get homepaged :( but obviously i agree. i hated reading "of mice and men" there were SO many curses that i didnt want to say

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Are you people in Middle School or something? Just say it. It's not like teachers don't hear kids swear all the time anyways.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

But what if you're not okay with saying them? Not everyone uses a curse word every sentence.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

They're just words. They're something that was made up and that people decided was bad. Just say it, what's the big deal?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes, but like I said, not everyone is comfortable with saying these words.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If you're not comfortable with it then don't say it. If you are, then say it. Problem solved.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm not comfortable with most cuss words. I'm okay with "damn" for some reason. But, I'm especially averse to "nigger." That word doesn't need to be spoken ever.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

There's a meaning to each word, it's not just a word, sometimes people, like anon and myself, realize that there are some things we just don't need to say. Cursing doesn't make you cool or anything.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well said.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I never said that it does. Curses only became curses because people chose to let themselves be afraid of them. They are an invention of people. The intent behind words should be what offends or repulses people, not the words themselves. You can say "nigger" or whatever when reading it out of a book because it's obvious that you don't mean it in a derogatory way and don't believe that black people are an inferior race. To be so frightened by something as abstract as a word that you don't even want to say it out loud is foolish. Words don't have power unless the listener chooses to let them have power. I can see I'm outnumbered here, so I'm done.

I get what you mean. Good job bro.

In elementary school, my teacher had us say "BEEP" when they said the word "damn" in Anastasia Kruptnick. Then last year in 10H English, the teacher said the "N-word" in To Kill a Mockingbird. One of the articles we read that was from a solider's point of view, he even read outloud "Fucking zombies." It made me giggle for some reason, probably the way he said it.

What my class prefers to do is emphasize any swear word that comes up.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Just say it, unless you personally have something against profanity. It's just literature, I'm pretty sure the author wants to have the impact of that swear word. My Literary Type Hon. teacher says all of the profanities, except racial slurs like nigger.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I got to say "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!" In some book. Good times.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I get to say nigger like 1o times every day in english because of reading <3

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Cooooool... ?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

To Kill a Mockingbird?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

nope . The color of water .

by Anonymous 13 years ago

...do you enjoy speaking racial slurs...?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

We read The Contender in English 10/3 and its based in the 1960's so they say the N-word a bit. When I was reading (since everyone in class knows I've NEVER used a cuss word) they all leaned in when i was getting up to it...and i paused and told my teacher i couldnt do it. Everyone was disappointed. It was kinda funny to me ^^

Lol.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Euphemisms. Duh.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I love it. I like to put extra emphasis on curse words.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Um... My English teacher swears more often in class than I do. XD All you do is grow a pair and read the damn book. I've had to say some pretty bad things in the plays I've been in, and the directors double as acting teachers for our school. We said the word faggot and fuck multiple times, as well as more minor things, on stage last production.

One time my teacher asked me to read something that said "hell" in it, and I got in trouble.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I've personally never had to read the parts with swear words, so I haven't had to deal with it. But I go to a private Christian school and the other day one kid volunteered to read and then noticed his part had a swear word and he goes, "Am I allowed to read the swear words?" and the teacher nods and one kid goes, "Just let it out!!" So I think it depends on the school, situation, teacher, AND of course the kid who's reading..

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't mind swearing. I just don't want the teacher to start yelling at me or something, because I've learned some of my teachers mind and some don't.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Hell isn't even bad at all in Australia... And I usually get other people to say them for me, most of em know I don't swear at all :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's not like you're saying them with the intent to hurt someone else. You're just reading someone else's words, that obviously the author thought was important to include.
